There's no perfect solution. Intermittent sources (wind+solar) are extremely difficult to scale beyond about 20% of the grid. Geothermal and hydro are great but only available in certain places, and in limited quantity. Until fusion power becomes viable (if it ever does), your options for the balance are nuclear or burning fossil fuels. Pick your poison. Pro tips for nuclear would be: don't use inherently unsafe, unstable reactor designs with no containment building (Chernobyl), and don't build your reactor right on the coast in a tsunami zone (Fukushima).
Wishful thinking is rife on this topic, as is the case in Sweden. We're closing in on the level where we'll be seeing electricity shortages during harsh winters here.
Alright, well, we can see the different sides forming up here... but I bet we'd all agree that the initial statement, The Reason Renewables Can't Power Modern Civilization Is Because They Were Never Meant To is a phenomenally STUPID one, right? I mean, "were never meant to"??? WTF? Like that has ANYTHING to do with power transfers, efficiencies, lifecycle costs, freakin' NEWTON'S LAWS or anything. "...they were never meant to..." "CLANG!"
This is how the left roll - if you are black or single mom or minority, you are never meant to financially self-sustain, so you should vote for me and I will keep the welfare checking coming.
Follow the money trail? Ha, sure then you end up with a fucked up America you have today where a few percent benefit and the majority is taken for a ride and told debt is good and ever more profits are better. Ever wondered why every good product in America goes to shits after short periods of time? Because the expectation is that companies increase their profits quarter after quarter. And of course do companies with special interest pay millions to fund BS studies that deny man made climate change. It all perfectly fits with the intentions of squeezing ever more profit out of businesses. And that the science community is split 50/50 in the man made climate change debate is a big fat lie. Over 95% of scientists and peer reviewed studies show that man made climate change is real and that it reached dangerous proportions that adversely affects out climate. Only the dumbest of people deny that. Anyone with an intellect above that of an ape has zero doubt in the validity of research that points to the adverse effects that CO2 has on our atmosphere. I won't further discuss this topic with you as I don't see the point to talk to someone who denies facts. We can debate trading related issues but I don't think you are realistic nor properly informed on this issue.
You did not even get it that he made a point that is in contradiction with your thought construct By the way this has nothing to do with left or right. It has everything to do with facts on climate change and that it is stupid to not try to look at better energy sources and claim those were never intended to partly/completely replace fossil sources. They were exactly researched and developed to replace fossil powered plants. Am out of this thread, should have known that a discussion with fact deniers leads nowhere
Yes, I agree with you and Grulstmrnn that the title is quite hyperbolic. I get that. But the central premise in the heart of the article - that the limitations behind current solar and wind power technology makes it difficult for a highly advanced and wealthy Western industrial State like Germany to quickly replace existing base load electrical generation; is indeed a sound cautionary tale. Now, I'm a Nuclear Engineer by training - so I am biased. But I think for everyone to dismiss the recent passive safety system modular nuclear reactor designs is wide of the mark if we are going to do something truly meaningful in a short period of time. Base load power generation is required - and in massive quantity. And you can have ten thousand acres covered in Solar Panels and either batteries or a pumped storage reservoir - or you can have a nuclear power station on a plot of land about the size of a ranch. Either way you have 2400 Megawatts of clean power.
Lastly just to show who is naive here: "Martin Arthur Armstrong (born November 1, 1949) is an American self-taught economic forecaster who uses his own computer model based on pi. He was convicted in 1999 of cheating investors out of seven hundred million dollars and hiding fifteen million dollars in assets from regulators." A convicted felon who now makes economic forecasts based on pi. Lmao. Seems to exactly correlate with your level of intellect and knowledge. I have seen enough. Shrugs.
Sure but the renewable energy share in Germany in 2005 was 10%, today it is over 40%. That is 14 years. And we are talking about the 4th largest economy in the world, a major manufactoring and export powerhouse. I believe those numbers point to the fact that great things are possible with the right attitude and a strong enough will. It does not have to be quick but it makes sense to stay on course because it goes in the right direction.
this is not the first time I saw response like this - a lot of empty stuff, without independent thinking.... it is also very hard for people to admit that they have been brainwashed for so long, and that 95% gets passed from one guy to the next... 95% agree there is some influence, but 50/50 on the issue if the human influence is significant enough to justify any actions... look at the pattern of the back and forth between you and me... I am responding to your points directly, yet you have no answers to mine... the 2 inch CO2, the funding situations on the 2 camps, the earth orbit cycle, the solar activity... you just choose to ignore them, and keep recycle their propaganda. it's ok, I don't care... I am just telling you, it will be very sad, when you realize on your death bed that you have been fooled for your entire life... it's never too late to wake up and admit you have been fooled... it's not something shameful... they control the media machine and the machine is designed not to inform the public, but to fool the public... the other option is you live the lie until your last breath, and that is ok too lol..... I have made enough from the market that I will be comfortable regardless, I truly don't care lol.... to me it's a comedy, how the people in the know manipulate the public and how easy the mass is manipulated... and you actually agreed to my point.. 'fucked up America'? no no... life is great man... you can't beat them you have to join them... how do you join them? you have to have independent thinking, you have to unfold their bullshit stories, then you can go to the feast dinner they have, then you can join the few that accumulate the wealth on the top of the pyramid. I tell ya it feels great to be at the top.... but you have to be willing to admit that you have been fooled lol.... that is the first step towards awakening, and see the truth, what this is all about.... 'this' including the market.
