The race between COVID vaccines and emerging variants

One of the low risk groups in 2020 is now becoming one of the high risk groups in 2021...no thanks to the rise of the Covid variants.

There use to be heavy discussion early last year (prior to the discovery of vaccines)...specially by me about how dangerous mutations of Covid could be more dangerous than the original Covid.

Not just dangerous to the body but could bring back more lockdowns or more restrictions because people just don't give a fuck about others in their environment even if those others are family / friends.

Just as bad, people will argue and try to prove their point by intentionally not following any CDC guidelines. After they've done that and the mutations explode on the world...the same asswipes will then blame the government. :banghead:

Sadly, I see this all playing out here at Elitetrader.com in the multiple different threads about Covid and elsewhere on social media. All of this could have been avoided had we just followed the science in the beginning instead of making it a political event for votes.

Just as sad, these same people ignore the fact that states in the United States with high vaccinations...its the reason for those states staying ahead of the variants to produce those declining Covid infection numbers...those states then removed their restrictions...opening up the state.

The Covidiots then stupidly believe the decline in infections is due to lifting (removing) mask mandates and removing restrictions...ignoring the huge vaccinations as the reason for the declining Covid infection numbers in those particular states.

It's pure nonsense and its truly sad / pathetic human behavior.

Actually, its a desperate attempt by the Covidiots to continue their online misinformation / disinformation campaign that began with supporting the Trump bullshit that its a democratic hoax and the virus will be gone tomorrow back in April 2020.

In a sick way...it seems to me that these particular Covidiots want this Pandemic to continue with its devastation so that they can continue bitching and pretending all the science is fear mongering.

Brazil continues to be a shit show despite a much lower obesity rate than the US and Sweden. See, a virus may be harmless to a certain population until you let it spread increasing it's chances of mutation and it becomes fatal to the once safe population

Numerous posters on here are a big joke almost nothing they post is logical and follows generally accepted medical advice. High vaccine areas need to be careful to want until the vaccines are fully effective and we can see how well they operate with these variants. If communities don't do so, they risk a serious setback. The unknowns still exist.

Another aspect of Covid is it isn't truly controlled unless it's taken care of globally. A dummy like TreeFrogTrader that seems to believe in extreme vaccine nationalism isn't getting this at all. Covid doesn't care about your border and no doubt NA citizens will want to travel again at some point.

This is one of the key problems with Natural Herd Immunity or just letting the virus rip through the population...

It will soon mutate and produce variants (mutations) that can become more deadly or less deadly.
    • We know now that these variants are more deadly.
Luckily, doctors and nurses where health care is good are now better experience with treating Covid patients and have better therapies for those infected. Unfortunately, countries like Brazil with so many poor communities...

Covid had been a mass murder in Brazil.

The other point on variants is "survival of the fittest". The less infectious variants tend to fade; the more infectious variants take over.

And keep in mind that COVID-19 is a "slow evolver" compared to the flu and other viruses. Imagine a very deadly virus that evolves quickly ripping through the population.

India has now a new mutation and the numbers have exploded. It's now in Cali too. The Norse have had natural immunity to another virus in the past due to inbred genetics if I recall

But science shows (the real science, not the witchcraft you subscribe to) that lethality drops in viruses that mutate for purposes of co-existence, no?

Lethality does not drop.... lethality evolves to the point where it still allows a virus to freely spread without killing too many of the hosts so it does not spread. The actual projected evolution for lethality of COVID is that it will increase rather than decrease in new variants. We are seeing this in action now. The U.K., Brazil and other variants are both more infectious and more lethal.

We're seeing this now? You have data to support this, then?
