no one is saying - non immune healthy individuals - in the low risk group won't get infected and won't spread it...That is not the goal.

The goal is to get them back to work... because if they do get infected they are likely to have less serious infections.

you keep the high risk group isolated as best you can because you know chances are many individuals in the low risk group are going to get infected sooner or later.

No one said the goal of shutdown is to prevent infection... that would take a very long time.

The shutdown was pitched to keep hospital beds open. They were never full.
This shutdown is a govt made disaster.

Most states are on track for opening up somewhere in May based on a 60 day timeframe of lockdown. The first stage includes opening restaurants with greater distancing in seating, the opening of all retail stores/malls with occupancy limits, and the re-opening of most manufacturing workplaces with protections in place. This will help get restaurants, retail and manufacturers back on track.

The PPP was intended to help these small businesses - however it backfired since most of the cash went to larger businesses. Showing that DC cannot do anything right and merely hands out money to their cronies.

We need to re-open the economy before a vaccine is available which is 18 months away at least. To do this requires re-opening in stages while keeping a close eye out for flare ups in COVID-19 infections.

Are you trying to say that hospitals were not nearly overwhelmed in New York and other U.S. cities.

Just because you live in California which applied the lockdown first and therefore managed to avoid having their hospitals overwhelmed.... does not mean your personal experience equates to what many others have experienced.

Let's help you with some math to dispel the ignorance.

    211,065 deaths / 3,055,651 cases = a 6.9% death rate from COVID-19

the models were off by massive amounts

    that is what we know.
we don't know how useful the lockdown was considering we are now being told 25 percent of NYC has antibodies...

The concept that 25% of New York City's population has antibodies in not holding up well in follow-up testing from what I have seen in newscasts. A more realistic number is in the single digits according to other estimates.

The earlier anti-body test study that purported this figure only tested 3000 people across the entire state of New York by only selecting people found outside of their homes (showing they are not isolating properly possibly). The numbers today seem to be up to 7500 people tested with a 25% result in NYC.

NYC is ramping up their testing and soon more complete results will be available.

  8. I think all this info is suspect because we are waay behind in testing.....jeez SK tested more people in the same amount of time.

Until we have mass testing the numbers will always be changing and swinging up and down.

  9. This is kind of the problem. I think what Jem is trying to say and what I'm certainly saying is that we have had statewide and nationwide lockdown policies imposed based upon what a few large metro areas were and are still experiencing. There was no need to do that from the jump. Most of America could have remained open or at least somewhat open with some of the protections put in place and see what would have happened. We never tried that and we should have.

before you respond to me with knee jerk denial bullshit... please do a google search...the numbers were updated today...

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that the number of statewide random antibody tests has expanded to 7,500, which reveals a better picture of the extent of coronavirus spread in New York.

Cuomo said 14.9% of those tested statewide tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies, which is up from the initial 13.9% statewide when a previous sample of 3,000 people was done on April 22. Cuomo said the 1% increase is statistically in the margin of error.

    Regionally, the results suggest:

    • 24.7% positive in New York City
    • 15.1% positive in Westchester/Rockland
    • 14.4% positive on Long Island
    • 3.2% positive in the rest of the state
The governor said he’s going to conduct antibody surveys of 1,000 NYPD and FDNY personnel to determine the infection rate in those organizations. A similar survey will be done with 3,000 health care workers and 1,000 transit workers.

“We want to un-PAUSE. May 15 is when the PAUSE regulations expire statewide. I will extend them in many parts of the state. But in some parts of the state, some regions, you can make the case that we should un-PAUSE on May 15. But you have to be smart about it,” Cuomo said. “Start thinking through what it means to reopen.”

    CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
As for the conditions of a reopening, Cuomo said first CDC guidelines suggesting a decline of hospitalizations for 14 days must be met. Construction and manufacturing would be the first industries to be brought back, but precautions to protect the workers must be considered. The health care capacity of a region which might also be reopened also needs to be considered, especially as flu season approaches later this year. Testing and tracing systems must also be in place.

“We can’t open an attraction that might bring many people from outside the region and then overwhelm people in that region. You have a lot of pent up demand,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo said he had asked President Donald Trump to allow the temporary medical facilities the federal government has constructed to stay in place through September. More than 1,000 people had been treated at the temporary hospital at the Javits Center.

Cuomo said the state was going to commit $25 million to help food banks that have been overwhelmed by demand as the pandemic continues. He asked philanthropies to also help. Food banks had seen a 40-60% surge in demand upstate, 40% increase on Long Island, 100% increase in New York City and 200% increase in Westchester. Philanthropies willing to help should contact Fran Barrett, Director of Nonprofits by emailing COVIDPhilantrhopies@exec.ny.gov.

“This is, I would say, the number one thing they can do to help,” Cuomo said.

The governor launched an initiative to prevent dairies from dumping excess milk. Cuomo said the state was partnering with various dairy-related production companies to purchase the excess milk and have it turned into products that can be brought to food banks.
