Newly reopened South Florida seen as an emerging coronavirus hot spot
    https://news.yahoo.com/newly-reopen...s-emerging-coronavirus-hotspot-223903143.html

Federal officials responding to the coronavirus pandemic are concerned about the rapidly rising number of cases in Palm Beach County, Fla., according to an internal Trump administration document reviewed by Yahoo News.

The document, a May 15 daily interagency update on the nation’s coronavirus response circulated by the Department of Homeland Security, notes new areas of concern for coronavirus. It was provided to Yahoo News by one of its recipients under the condition that that recipient not be identified.

“As most states have begun phased re-opening, several COVID-19 hot spots continue to emerge,” the notice says. Three counties are then listed: Palm Beach; San Bernardino County, Calif.; and Marshall County, Ala.

“Palm Beach County, FL reported a 71% increase in new cases the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days,” the document explains. “The state authorized Palm Beach County to begin Phase 1 of reopening on 11 May, which includes the reopening of barbershops, salons, restaurants, and other businesses.”

President Trump recently changed his primary residence from Manhattan to his Mar-a-Lago golf resort, which is located in Palm Beach County.

The information in the document is attributed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and was collected on May 12, which means cases were rising even before the county began to reopen on May 11. Other parts of the state had begun to reopen earlier, on May 4.

Coronavirus Florida: County among three national hotspots? Federal numbers way off

A leaked federal document records a recent weekly rise in cases of 71 percent in Palm Beach County, but that never happened...(more at link)

Yet, the report, citing hotspots that continue to emerge, according to Yahoo News, lists three places of concern: Palm Beach County; San Bernardino County, Calif.; and Marshall County, Ala.

“Palm Beach County, FL reported a 71% increase in new cases the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days,” Yahoo reported, quoting the document. The federal report correctly pointed out that the state eased restrictions on businesses on that same day.

“The state authorized Palm Beach County to begin Phase 1 of reopening on 11 May, which includes the reopening of barbershops, salons, restaurants, and other businesses,” Yahoo News quoted the report as saying.

The only way the figures result in a 71 percent increase is if officials looked at the seven-day rise in cases on May 10, when it was 740 vs. May 3, when it was 433. But that number is so variable that the very next day, the comparison would have resulted in a 5 percent increase, from 548 to 578.

Massive jump in Texas COVID-19 cases
    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/article/Massive-jump-in-Texas-COVID-19-cases-15275484.php

Texas reported 1,801 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday — the biggest single-day jump in cases since the pandemic began.

A growing outbreak in the Texas Panhandle is a big reason for the surge in cases. More than 700 new cases were reported out of Amarillo on Saturday with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warning those numbers will continue to climb as the state increases testing in that hot spot.

Social distancing is critical to stopping new cases...

New COVID-19 cases in New York coming from people leaving home - Cuomo
    https://www.reuters.com/article/hea...-from-people-leaving-home-cuomo-idUSKBN22S0S3

New York’s new confirmed COVID-19 cases are predominantly coming from people who left their homes to shop, exercise or socialize, rather than from essential workers, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday.

“That person got infected and went to the hospital or that person got infected and went home and infected the other people at home,” Cuomo said during his daily news conference on the coronavirus outbreak.

State data showed the number of new cases statewide has fluctuated between 2,100 and 2,500 per day. On Saturday, the number of new cases decreased to 2,419, from 2,762 on Friday.

Cuomo said while last week he had theorized that new cases were coming from essential workers, “that was exactly wrong.

“The infection rate among essential workers is lower than the general population and those new cases are coming predominantly from people who are not working and they are at home,” he said.

The state’s budget director, Robert Mujica, said officials expect to learn a lot more about the genesis of new cases from contact tracing over the next week.

Cuomo has said that New York was hiring thousands of workers to trace the contacts of people who test positive for the coronavirus. Health experts say contact tracing is critical to isolating potentially contagious people in order to limit further outbreaks.

Cuomo said the five regions of the state that were allowed on Friday to reopen for business — out of 10 total regions — were required to have a certain number of tracers proportionate to their populations.

“The tracing operation is tremendously large and challenging,” he said.

New York state, home to both bustling Manhattan and hilly woods and farmland that stretch hundreds of miles north to the Canadian border, has been the global epicenter of the pandemic, but rural areas have not been nearly as badly affected as New York City, the country’s biggest city at roughly 8.4 million people.

Driven by the impact in New York City, the state has accounted for more than one-third of the nearly 80,000 American who have died from COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to a Reuters tally.

Statewide, the outbreak is ebbing, with coronavirus hospitalizations falling to 6,220, more than a third of the level at the peak one month ago, state data showed.

In the five regions where restrictions were eased on Friday, in central and upstate New York, construction and manufacturing work was allowed to resume, and retail businesses offering curbside pickup or in-store pickup for orders placed ahead were allowed to reopen. A broader pause on activity in New York City and elsewhere was extended until at least May 28.

New York, along with the nearby states of New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware, will partially reopen beaches for the Memorial Day holiday weekend on May 23-25, Cuomo has said.

New York’s Watkins Glen International auto race circuit and several horse racing tracks in the state can reopen without fans from June 1, the governor said on Saturday.

Cuomo warned that with an increase in economic activity, New Yorkers should expect an increase in coronavirus cases.

“We don’t want to see a spike,” he said. “It depends on how people react and it depends on their personal behavior.”

  7. So what you're going saying is that it is impossible to practice social distancing AND leave your house? What is the point of social distancing at all on that case? Guess we just need to stay in our homes until November 3rd.

Is your trip out of your house necessary? or are you just doing it for fun? Are you following your state's guidelines for social distancing? Many people in New York recently were not. The increased cases are the result.

New York and other states are following a phased re-opening as per the best medical and public health guidance. People should follow the guidance if they want their economies open sooner rather than having to be shut down again when cases rapidly increase.

  9. What does it matter if it's necessary or not, out is out. Do I somehow have less risk at the grocery store? Guess that's magic too

Do you wear a mask at the grocery store? Do you follow basic precautions recommended by your state?

And yes... your local bar/restaurant is more risky than your grocery store. Your local hair salon is more risky than your grocery store.

Partying with 200+ people in the street while ignoring state regulations is certainly more risky than going to the grocery store.
