The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun.... is a good guy with a gun

No way would I ever suggest a woman who is not likely to train much in using an AR. I don't recommend an AR for home defense at all, mainly due to penetration, but also because it is a lot harder to get to, store, etc. So if the choice is between a shotgun and an AR, then shotgun is my answer all week long.

I use a P226 Sig .40 (I went with the 40 because the caliber has more stopping power than a 9, though the 226 comes in both). I also use hollow points to cut down on penetration. A good .380 is also good for a woman - packs enough of a punch and with hollow points can mitigate penetration risk. But you still have to train. If you have someone in your life that wants a firearm but doesn't want to train, you owe it to them to make them train with it. At least once a month.

  3. Even I can be reasonable on issues that matter.:D This issue matters. Lots of guns out there, too many in the hands of people who have no business owning one, and then there's the criminals. Criminals we can't do much about other than have stricter enforcement of existing laws.
We can do a much better job of keeping them out of the hands of the obviously mentally disturbed. We can do more detailed background checks. If you need a gun today, then that's a red flag to me. Anyone can wait for a complete background check. It ain't the wild west. We can provide better training. We can provide better education of when it's permissible to use a weapon in self defense. We can and should do better at this.
And everyone could dial it back a couple notches so we could have some sensible discussion. The tanks aren't coming down the street, so there's no need for this organized militia argument, and guns don't kill people. People kill people. Lets hold them accountable. And then there's the reality that we live in a nation of better than 300 million people. Going to be a few crazy fucks in the mix and that's just how it is. No need to start the political finger pointing just because some random loon lost it. It happens. It's sad, it's tragic, and it will happen again. That is reality of the world we live in.

  4. I think that, for the most part, concealed (or open) carry among civilians is a mistake. I think anyone who wants to own firearms should undergo mandatory training, but that the carry boys be required to get intensive training over and above the usual, which would include simulated confrontations. Because, after all, that's why the would-be action heroes are carrying, right? (And potentially endangering those around them.)

I knew people were not going to understand. For me training with a gun was about being able to defend in my home and see shit as well as possible.

Two eyed hand gun shooting causes issues if you are left eye dominant but have a right handed grip. There are many articles and videos explaining cross eyed dominance. None of which I had ever read before. But, as someone who played sports competitively I knew two eyed shooting with a straight on stance was an issue.

I could spend hundreds of maybe thousand hours to retrain you eyes but then you might mess up your other sports and I still know that would not work under pressure. I know my body under pressure.

    Here is example...
By the way I don't like this preferred solution. Moving your right eye back but keeping both eyes open trying to shoot down the center... will cause problems in a fast reaction scenario... especially in low light. Your left is simply not going to allow it.

Rob Leatham seems to be saying close an eye or move your head.
Now I had not seen this before. But I told it was natural to move your head so your eyes don't struggle for dominance.

    This guy has other info.

Now there are many articles from cops and other who explain that under pressure most shooters don't even have time to get into that stance and push the guy out to sights. Many times it just does not happen.

Some argue learning how to shoot center mass before even getting to sights right out of the holster is the most valuable training. (I did not get to do that on a range but I would have liked to do that type of training) . You should read the articles. For me pushing the gun out would be a waste of valuable time. I am going to a natural stance where my body already knows how to shoot straight.

Looking for one-handed pistol shooting tips? It can really be a big challenge, but with proper know-how and practice, you can effectively shoot your gun with one hand.

Pistol Shooting Tips: The Basics Of One-Handed Shooting
There can be circumstances where you might not be able to shoot your gun with both hands. It is probably due to an injury you incur before or during a gun fight or you may need to fire your weapon using your support hand in a pinch. Whatever the reason may be, it is imperative you know how to shoot using one hand, especially in a dangerous situation. In this article, we’ll discuss the importance and the basics of one-handed shooting. Below are pistol shooting tips to help you develop your abilities which will help you in critical situations.

Why Should You Learn to Use the “Weak” or “Support” Hand for Shooting
If you’re used to aiming and firing from your strong hand (the majority are also), then you must know that learning the same thing on your support hand is just as beneficial. It makes you a well-rounded shooter and one that is ready to defend himself in any situation.
    1. It’s a natural response

It’s not uncommon for someone to shoot using only the “gun hand” when met with an unexpected attack. There’s something quite natural about simply raising the gun and shooting when a sudden, close threat appears.

In scenario training, the free hand is usually occupied with a flashlight or doing tasks like opening doors. In real life, hands are often busy too so it just makes sense to train one-handed shooting.

    2. When the other hand is holding a flashlight

Shooting with a flashlight is a skill people should learn particularly if it’s for personal and home defense. Even if you’re using a two-handed shooting technique with the light, there are plenty of instances when the aim of the light and that of the muzzle shouldn’t be the same—that’s a whole other topic. But suffice to say, one-handed shooting skills can make nighttime navigation safer and easier for people on both sides of the gun.

  6. Shockingly, I agree with you, at least up to a point. I am a zealot on the subject of gun rights, and I strongly support concealed carry laws. That said, concealed carry troubles me.(Open carry is even worse.) For every Tsing Tao, who trains conscientiously and has a martial arts background that has taught him discipline and self control, there are plenty of well-meaning people who lack both. And let's face it, there are some people who think packing a gun makes them a bigger man. I read a quote once," If you carry a gun, sooner or later you are going to find an excuse to use it."

That is what worries me. Being armed raises the stakes of every potential encounter. If you get into a scrape, you have to worry about the other guy taking your weapon or reacting as if he is in a life threatening situation.

Of course there are numerous instances where a good guy with a gun saved the day. The problem I have with armed crime stoppers is that most compact carry guns only pack 6 or 7 rounds. Get into a shootout in a grocery store and you will be out before you know it. What do you use them, biting sarcasm? And you better have a good way to signal to SWAT that you are on their side when they arrive.

  7. This is very true, and the reality is far worse than anyone who has not been in that situation can imagine. But the other side of it is, would you rather not have a gun at all? What are your chances then?

  8. I am deeply troubled by your showing some sense and reason. This paradigm shift may take some getting used to...

  9. Sure, but what about innocent bystanders? An unprepared civilian with a handgun may kill one or more without meaning to. But they'll be just as dead as if the perp shot them.

If the police and armed forces do simulations to ensure that they do not unintentionally hit "friendlies" then what possible reason would there be for civilians who wish to carry guns to not have this training as well? It should be extensive, comprehensive and mandatory. Otherwise, as I noted earlier, there are innocent-looking ticking time bombs walking all around you. Good luck with that.

  10. This thread has been one of the best I have seen on ET for the short period of time that I have been on it. surprisingly, it has nothing to do with trading or market but showing what America is and what Americans do. we all have been at eachother's throat and been punching and counterpunching eachother over the BS political shenannigans, An issue as controversial as gun control has brought us to the point that we started complimenting eachother. not sure it will last but this is what America means to me. ability to go at it freely and the ability to compromise. Im enjoying this whaile it lasts.
