The One-Minute Workout

  1. HIIT is cardio. It's great if you are not at maintenance or you're jacked to the gills with gear like the guy in your pic. I trained a South African during contest prep and the guy was MASSIVE and did DB curls maxing at 50s. Never saw him incline more than 225. Almost all machine/cable work which isn't surprising as most pros do it. Would go out of the gym for smoke breaks (why I dropped him).

Crazy gear cycles are going to make you gain from rowing, FFS.

I've never see a truly jacked guy who only did HIIT. It cannot be done. Can you be healthy and performance-oriented, sure.

  2. SA-guy sat on the bike for 20 minutes at like a 30 cadence. Basically as total degen but he knew how to cut and was 4-5% two weeks from the show. The guy in your pic is probably on 500mg of test + strong androgen. He's not crazy size or anything but that's a user's pic. Period.

  3. Clarence Bass, the guy in the photo, admitted to having experimented with steroids when he was competing. He stopped afterwards. The photo would have been while he was on it, of course. I understand that he explained in some detail what he did in one of his books, but I didn’t read that one.

The HIIT is a replacement for cardio rather than for resistance training. Bass did both. And that is what I am doing. Even though HIIT is somewhat anaerobic, it really only replaces the cardio component of my exercise regimen because I find low-to-medium intensity cardio to be mind numbingly boring. I prefer to go all out for shorter durations. I like the challenge. I like the brevity.

  4. I get it, but it's implied that you're going to go max effort and look like Bass.

  5. No. Not a chance. I’be never done gear and am not about to start now. And I agree that he looks like someone on steroids in that pic. Since going natural, he didn’t look the same, but he continued to remain very lean, and even now at his age. That picture was probably taken over 40 years ago.

  6. He's ripped but you can tell from his chest. His legs look pretty average, TBH. He's lean. It allows you to get shredded but maintain mass. Do HIIT! Look at me!

  7. I don’t think that was the point of his article, though. Just that he employed both lifting and HIIT in his regimen and it worked for him. I guess the photo was supposed to be inspirational, if somewhat deceptive in that context. I have a fairly good idea of what being on PEDs looks like. I may get it wrong at the periphery, but I have a pretty good idea. And I was under no illusion that he was natural in that shot or that I would ever look like him.

But apart from all that, what’s your take on supplementing lifting with HIIT rather than monotonous, steady state cardio?
