Capitol Police arrest suspect in doxing of GOP senators
BY EMILY BIRNBAUM - 10/03/18 07:17 PM EDT

U.S. Capitol Police on Wednesday arrested a suspect for allegedly "doxing" one or more GOP senators by posting their private information online.

The suspect, 27-year-old Jackson Cosko of Washington, D.C., has been charged with publicizing restricted personal information, witness tampering, second-degree burglary, threatening interstate communications, unauthorized use of a government computer, identity theft, and unlawful entry, according to a Wednesday press release.

The Capitol Police said an investigation is ongoing, but declined to answer The Hill's requests for comment.

Reports emerged last week that someone from within the U.S. House of Representatives had posted the home addresses and personal cell phone numbers of GOP Sens. Orrin Hatch (Utah), Mike Lee (Utah) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) on Wikipedia.

The anonymous Wikipedia edits were made as the three senators questioned Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last Thursday.

Kavanaugh was testifying alongside Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in 1982.

The edits were posted by the @congressedits, a Twitter account which automatically tweets edits made to Wikipedia pages from Capitol Hill computers. The Twitter account was suspended for posting personal information.

Rumors circulated online that the IP address behind the edits came from the office of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), though the California congresswoman later said the Capitol Police and a tech specialist determined the "IP address in question does not belong to my office or anyone on my staff."

MAN ACCUSED OF DOXXING GOP SENATORS ALLEGEDLY THREATENED TO ALSO DOX THEIR CHILDREN

The congressional aide accused of doxxing at least three GOP senators allegedly threatened to “leak it all” if a staffer who confronted him told anyone — including the health information and social security numbers of senators’ children.

Jackson Cosko, 27, who formerly worked for Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and Maggie Hassan, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with a number of criminal offenses for allegedly posting to Wikipedia the home addresses and phone numbers of GOP Senators Mike Lee, Lindsey Graham and Orrin Hatch.

The former aide was reportedly confronted by a staffer after being caught using a computer in Hassan’s office that he “was not authorized to use,” according to Fox News.

According to Capitol Police Captain Jason Bell’s sworn statement, as reported by Fox News, Cosko walked out after being confronted by the witness, who then called police. The witness then reportedly received an email from “livefreeorpwn@gmail.com” several hours later that said, “If you tell anyone I will leak it all. Emails signal conversations gmails. Senators children’s health information and socials.”

Cosko has been charged with threats in interstate communication, publishing restricted personal information, witness tampering, identity theft, unauthorized access of a government computer, second-degree burglary and unlawful entry, according to Capitol Police.

Fox News reported that Cosko “was dressed in shorts, a t-shirt and tennis shoes and looked uneasy as Magistrate Judge Deborah Robinson detailed the seven charges against him, which carry the possibility of more than 20 years in prison.”

  9. He will end up with a suspended sentence, just like the Inauguration terrorists got. If he was a conservative, he would get the max sentence. Prove me wrong.

I don't know if he would get a suspended sentence, but, I would not be surprised if he did.
