The National Football League: 2009 edition

  1. Damn you lame Minnesota defense!! I thought I had the game late in the 4th quarter and a 3-1 week. I don't see this team going anywhere in the postseason. Three straight 400 yard games allowed and they just squeeze by Balt and San Fran with Favre playing the best ball of his career.

  2. The head scratcher for me was when everyone jumped on Philly's bandwagon this year.

  3. I wish i would have bet that KC game, but i still keep thinking that Washington is going to have a breakout game, i guess they really are that bad. I am just happy that i was able to jump ship finally this week on Tennessee, they are also actually that bad, who the hell allows 59 points with 6 inches of snow on the field. The guy i played against this week in one of my fantasy leagues had both welker, and Brady, needless to say he kicked my ass, almost beat me with just those 2.

  4. I think the theme for weeks six results should be "every dog has its day" or maybe "Revenge of the nerds." Oakland, KC, Buffalo and Carolina, with three wins between them, all won. St. Louis, sadly, did not but made it close in Jacksonville. Detroit was blown out in GB.

Two games will get everybody's attention. NO blew out the Giants and their vaunted defense, 48-27, as Brees had another 360 yard outing. Scary.

Bill Belichick proved again why he is one of the most despised people in professional sports, as the Pats ran it up in a shocking 59-0 humiliation of Tennessee. BB pulled Golden Boy Tom Brady with the score 52-0 in the third quarter but still found it necessary to pass 11 more times against an overmatched Titans defense that was playing two rookie corners because of injuries to starters. Brady seems to enjoy running it up as much as BB, so I'm not going to be too upset when his career is ended by a late hit or helmet to his chin in one of these games. You'd think a team like the Pats would have more class, but Belichick is not familiar with the concept. This is not the BCS. Victory margin doesn't matter, plus you have to play these guys again and again. Plenty of them will hold a grudge.

Shoutouts for road wins this week go to Houston, Carolina, KC, Arizona and Buffalo.

As for my picks, I'm beginning to remind myself of Jacksonville. Up one week, terrible the next. I followed up last week's 3-0 effort with an 0-2 skunking, leaving me11-7 for the year. At least I didn't lay the points with the Iggles, who achieved the considerable feat of making Oakland look decent. I gave the 14 points with the Steelers at home against woeful Cleveland, and Big Ben's 400+ yard passing day should have spelled blowout, but four turnovers plus a 100 yard kickoff return TD by Browns star Josh Cribbs produced a 13 point win.

I gave the points with the Jets at home against the Bills, but sometimes rookie QBs play like rooks and produce 5 INT days. That plus the loss of dominating NT Kris Jenkins offset RB Thomas Jones 210 yard day and handed the Bills an improbable OT win.

Denver at SD tomorrow night should be a good one.

  5. It seems that there are only a few quality teams in the NFL this year. Can't remember a year that had this many inept teams.

In regards to the game tonight, I am staying away. Even the automatic MNF over doesn't look good as Dener is 0-5 on the over, while SD is 3-1.

  6. If you saw the Giants/Oakland game a couple weeks back, you'd think that Oakland wouldn't win another game this year. Philly is not an elite team but losing to Oakland is pathetic.

  7. Denver is 5-0 against the spread this year though while San Diego is 1-3, so taking Denver +3.5 is a good bet IMO anyways.
Denver could pull a stinker this week though after last weeks huge emotional win to the Pats.

  8. How many points are enough to assure a win? 3TD's? 4? 5?

BB wanted his troops that have been faltering and inconsistent recently to feel invincible once again. pro football isn't the boy scouts. you WIN or you are out. it's not BB job to make the Titan's feel good about their rout, and their shitty season. NE doesn't have a lock on the AFC east. a lot of talk about Brady's inconsistency, among other things. NE got a lot of psychological momentum from this game, they needed it!

  9. I disagree with this AAA (but as a Pats fan I may be biased). If the Pats were truly running up the score, they would have kept Brady in for the whole game and went for 100pts (yes it was that onesided). Getting 14pts in the 2nd half, when they probably could have got a lot more, is not running up the score. This was a great opportunity to bring in a rookie, backup QB and give him some valuable experience 'throwing' the ball. What would you have had them do in the 2nd half? Should they have taken a knee on every play? Should they have run the ball but stopped a yard short of getting a first down? Should they have just given up trying and insulted the Titans instead of embarrassing them?

The Patriots offense has been somewhat out of sync all season and this gave them an opportunity to get back in sync and build some more confidence for next week and the rest of the season. Should they refrain from running their offense the way they want to, just to spare the Titans feelings?
