Simply what happens to me is that I am not smart enough. For this game you have to be very, very, very, very smart. Even so, being very, very, very smart, the market will always have a random component where intelligence is useless.
If you are concerned with not loosing lots of money, I think intraday is your BEST choice as a trading style to master. Directional options may be a good choice as well. Do not do any trading(not talking about investing) that involves overnight risk. One day you will wake up with big losses. Don't get lulled by the long low volatility bull run, this is not the norm. The longer the timeframe, the larger the drawdowns, the longer the recovery time, and the least confidence, imho. You need to be well capitalized to play that properly. BTW, the machines are NOT taking your "children's bread." Why are you even trading with bread money anyway? Good luck.
