I live in a town that suffered a direct hit from Katrina. (The center of the eye passed only a few miles from my home.) Irene looks similar to me but may lose a little energy as it moves North. Let's hope so. This is a very serious storm. Don't take the threat too lightly. Over 1800 people were killed by Katrina! I agree that the media usually greatly exaggerates. Not in this case though. Be safe everyone.
Right now forecast is for borderline Cat-1 with 80-100 mph gusts for nyc metro area. If it tracks over NYC/Western LI they're saying it will push water from the LI sound and the atlantic into the harbor, so that could be a problem, especially if its high-tide. That track would also mean the worst winds for Eastern LI, worst rain for jersey.
