6 states might be manipulating COVID-19 data as they reopen, reports suggest — here's what can skew the numbers

    • Several states have presented COVID-19 data in ways that might misrepresent their outbreaks and response efforts as they attempt to reopen, according to news reports.
    • Texas, Virginia, and Vermont reportedly combined tests for active and past cases, inflating their perceived testing capacities.
    • Florida, Georgia, and Arizona have been accused of trying to downplay case counts by fudging numbers or silencing coronavirus researchers.
    • As all 50 states at least partially reopen, accurate data is crucial to preventing, detecting, and containing potential surges of new cases.
As new coronavirus case counts appear to slow and decline in parts of the US, all 50 states have started easing lockdown restrictions.

Public health experts have repeatedly warned that states risk triggering new waves of cases if they reopen prematurely, without robust information about who's infected as well as data on how and where the virus is still spreading.

However, news reports suggest that six states — Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Florida, Georgia, and Arizona — might be fudging their numbers in various ways that drum up support for decisions to lift stay-at-home orders.

Here are the decisions each state has made that might skew coronavirus numbers.

  2. My God man...how hard is it to just report data as is and not fuck with it.....we would all be in a better place if Trump, his staff and all the Governors just reported the facts collected and not try to spin thinking we are children and need a bedtime story told with the facts.

  3. That's not the world we live in. Reporting facts is boring as hell and takes about 5 fucking minutes to do. That doesn't work in a beat the drum 24/7 world on the never ending campaign trail and media cycle.

All we want is for states to issue transparent factual data and that their political leadership does not fake the data in a wholesale manner to drive their agenda.

The media can take the data drive their media cycle. Individuals and business owners can look at the raw data and make decisions. Politicians can drive their campaigns with the facts as a starting point.

  5. Few people want the facts, EVERYONE wants the commentary and the politicians know this. They're too busy counting votes and focus group results to be burdened with just the facts ma'am and get on with the task at hand.

  6. I wonder if the response and actions by all would have been better in a non-election year...

When extreme liberals spread paranoia, hysteria and lies daily to keep the US economy shutdown to damage President Donald Trump, not all the chicken littles in the US can lie enough for people to believe them. As Abe Lincoln said, "You can fool some of the people, some of the time. You can fool some of the people all of the time. But, you cannot fool all of the people all of the time." When you lie so many times, you have no credibility and only fake news.

  8. Maybe so, but one thing for sure, no Trump as president, no complete shutdown nationwide. That I would bet the farm on.
