Tesla’s California virtual power plant delivers 100 MW to help the grid

Tesla’s virtual power plant (VPP) in California delivered 100 MW of power to help the grid not use gas peaker plants yesterday.

It’s peaker plant season in California. Heat waves are hitting the region, people are cranking up their ACs, and it is putting quite a load on the electrical grid.
Tesla has been using virtual power plants to aggregate its distributed energy systems, rooftop solar and Powerwall, to provide grid services and get more value for their customers.

A virtual power plant (VPP) consists of distributed energy storage systems, like Tesla Powerwalls, used in concert to provide grid services and avoid the use of polluting and expensive peaker power plants.
In 2021, Tesla launched a VPP pilot program in California, where Powerwall owners would join in voluntarily without compensation to let the VPP pull power from their battery packs when the grid needed it.

It helped Tesla prove the usefulness of such a system.
Following the pilot program, Tesla and PG&E, the electric utility covering Northern California, launched the first official virtual power plant through the Tesla app.
This new version of the Tesla Virtual Power Plant actually compensates Powerwall owners $2 per kWh that they contribute to the grid during emergency load reduction events. Homeowners are expected to get between $10 and $60 per event.

Later, we reported that Tesla’s California VPP expanded to Southern California Edison (SCE) to now cover most of the state.
The VPPs have been growing since. Tesla announced that it had one of those “emergency load” events yesterday, and its VPPs provided over 100 MW of capacity during the event:
If the event lasted an hour, it would have generated over $200,000 in revenue to Tesla’s Powerwall owners in the VPP programs.

Tesla is gradually launching those programs in more states and countries, and it is scaling them as it deploys more Powerwalls.
The company has now deployed over 600,000 Powerwalls around the world.

As I said before, unlike the traditional Ford, GM..., Tesla is not just an automobile manufacturer.

  3. Here in calif..I know many many people that have solar panels. But I don't know anyone that purchased from The Musk Empire companies.

I also know many people that use batteries to store solar power, But I don't know anyone that uses a Tesla to store or "interact in anyway" with solar panels or batteries. I don't know anyone that purchased their battery from Tesla Corp.

You could use your Ford F150 battery pack as your storage but Ford doesn't sell solar panels for homes.:(

If you don't know anyone, they must not exist and the traditional media is lying to you, again.

Tesla has reached 600,000 worldwide Powerwall installations

Tesla has reached a new milestone with the installation of its Powerwall energy storage systems around the world, just as the company starts rolling out its next-generation version of the system in the U.S.

On Friday, the Tesla Energy account on X said that the company has reached 600,000 Powerwall installations worldwide. The milestone comes just weeks after the next-gen Powerwall 3 officially went on sale in the U.S., after Tesla had slowly been deploying the new product throughout much of last year.

Although Powerwall 3 orders only became available through Tesla’s website earlier this month, installations of the system had been spotted throughout last year and were even pointed out by CEO Elon Musk. The company also dropped the price of the Powerwall 2 in the U.S. and listed Powerwall 3 specs on its website last year, suggesting that an official launch may be imminent.

Tesla has been a dominating force in the U.S. battery storage market, claiming about 30.2 percent of the sector’s market share in the country last year. Although the Powerwall 3 isn’t yet available on the company’s website for orders outside the U.S., the company has been delivering the Powerwall 2 around the world for the past few years.

In November, Tesla announced that it had deployed more than 1 GWh of Powerwall installations in Europe, which the company said was enough to power around 41,000 homes for 12 hours.

Tesla has also been piloting what it calls “Virtual Power Plant” (VPP) programs in recent years, essentially letting Powerwall owners sell electricity back to the grid in times of peak demand—and creating a sort of giant, distributed battery across households.

The company is currently piloting VPP programs in multiple U.S. states, including California, Texas, Massachusetts, and others, along with a recent program launched in Puerto Rico, and other locations outside the U.S.

Fine. As for me, I have no reason not to believe you.

Still like I said, its a big state and a anecdotal post on the topic is fairly simple-minded.

Gee I don't have any, the guy next door or across the street doesn't ... in a state of 38+ million people.
