So if the environment has to take a few too many hits to "save it" ... so be it?

I wouldn't characterize it like that. Anything we do to create energy to power our lives has a cost on something. Extraction has a cost, but oil and coal have additional costs that have been proven to negatively impact the environment and human health, so I choose the lesser evil.

Used EV prices collapse in US

A used electric vehicle in the US now costs less than a gas equivalent, as consumers turn away from EVs over concerns about range and infrastructure. A survey found just 18% of drivers said they would be likely to buy an EV, a multi-year low: They were more likely to be interested in gas/electric hybrids. Shifting consumer attitudes have hit the market: The EV manufacturer Fisker filed for bankruptcy last week, while the rental firm Hertz sold 20,000 of its Teslas, partly because requests were lower than anticipated. Analysts told Business Insider, however, that despite the slowdown, a complete rejection of EVs was unlikely: US emissions regulation will keep pushing the market towards zero-carbon vehicles.

You are not interested in reading something that is against your thesis?

To me it is actually not anti-EV. For a product that is coming down a steep learning curve, it will always happen, be it EV or PC or AI....

  7. Environmentalism aside, the overshadowing fact is that fossil fuel energy is finite and will in the long term run out and in the short term become only for the wealthy.

Home solar power with battery and capacity to charge your car will be the only thing that ensures the luxury of driving A to B.

And,No,I dont see this scenario occurring soon.

There are a couple ways to read this.
On the supply side, the price of EVs is dropping faster than ICE, because of lower materials cost (batteries) and competition between EV makers. It's a new industry and thus expected while ICE have been around long enough to operate on low margins.
It thus makes sense that prices for used EVs also drop. It's always been the case that early adopters pay a premium for new products that quickly lose value with time and the arrival of newer products.
I don't know much about pickup trucks, but I don't imagine there's much difference between an F150 from 2014 and one from 2024 while in EV tech it's transformational.
On the demand side, it's understood that EV adoption will go through phases. The early adopters have done their part and we're beginning to see the broader market tipping their toes in this new tech, with significant incentives from gov.
As I expressed in another post, the US will be very different from Europe and Asia, letting states determine their policies. On one side, the West Coast and Northeastern states are mandating the end of ICE sales, while on the other, some states are making it difficult to sell EVs or even build infrastructures for them. I say, let it be. Ultimately, State voters will decide how they want their future to look like and the most effective way is to see what their neighbors have. Isn't that the organic American way?

Key words in the below headline is ... states ... ban ... sale of. Not resale of used vehicles or those bought outside of those states, then registered inside those states. Moonshiners of the past dealt with that predicament for decades effectively.

12 US States Are Planning to Ban the Sale of Gas-Powered Cars

    https://www.cnet.com/home/electric-vehicles/states-banning-new-gas-powered-cars/

"The regulations don't force anyone to stop driving their current automobile or prevent them from buying a used car. They also don't prevent you from buying an ICE vehicle in another state and registering it locally."

"Since only 12 states have adopted Section 177 of the Clean Air Act, there will likely still be a strong gas-powered vehicle market in America for the foreseeable future."

From my experience with new products, it actually supports EV proliferation as it is forecasting EV will eventually be cheaper than ICE.

If you look at complexity, parts counts, ease of automation, potential reliability, etc., EV trumps ICE.
