Look to the insurance companies and their lobbyists for your answer. The safety issue at play is the same as helmet laws for cyclist. Some states have them, some don’t. While I love the air in my (balding) hair, I’d never take out on my bike without a skull bucket. I normally ride with a white helmet, people instinctively see cop at first sight (that might be more of a liability in today’s environment?)
Yes, its a safety issue. Masks are a safety issue that even more so is balanced to the "constitutional rights" of others not to be affected by you. There is no constitutional argument to win here, all settled in law a long time ago.
Personally don’t see masks as a constitutional issue, even though alot of riders consider helmet laws as such. There’s a lot of old fart, freedom lovin’ riders out there that don’t take kindly to people telling them what to do. But as for helmets the person at risk is the rider. Masks, the other way around, or so we are told.
Helmet wearer here. It depends on the type of riding people do. I get that the Dutch don't bother with helmets riding around sedately in Amsterdam but I tend to become aggressive on my road bikes and I'm not exactly moving at commuter speeds lol. I've seen peoples heads bounce off the pavement so I usually buy a fresh high-end helmet every couple of years and I wear it. Masks? Yeah it makes sense indoors and we have a mandate here for public indoor use. But they came out yesterday mandating mask usage OUTDOORS and IN YOUR CAR and I'm simply not going to comply. Its too stupid and too authoritarian. I'm a few weeks out from a move to Florida and I just about can't stand being on the West Coast for another minute.
Exactly @Buy1Sell2 who raised it as such does not think its a constitutional matter, he is just one of the old farts who say rights and unconstitutional to everything. We apply rules "equally unfairly" as its the best way to make sure they are followed at all.
Go argue with the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. You clearly are more knowledgeable than all of the doctors at the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and more knowledgeable than all of the scientific studies that they referenced. I mean everyone should consider completely disregarding what the US physicians and surgeons are saying and just listen to @Bugenhagen. Everyone should also completely disregard all scientific studies unless endorsed by @Bugenhagen and Rachel Maddow. I mean someone in your family was one of the authors on a scientific study, therefore, @Bugenhagen is more knowledgeable than any doctor or scientist.
Here’s my take, and understand that I live in rural, let me underline that rural Oklahoma, there’s basically zero cases in my neck of the woods, hardly anyone wears them here. I carry a mask in my truck, on the dash, feel the hot sunlight helps disinfect it, 160’ in the summer sun. I travel, if the place I’m going is inside, crowds, I’ll put it on. If I’m going to be around people I feel are at risk. I’ll put it on. Day to day, gas station, store etc, no. But I am conscious about touching my face and sanitizing my hands. If someone is obviously sick, i steer clear. Likewise If I thought I was under the weather I’m staying away from people, very easy to do where I live. I’m conscious of the fact that coronavirus exists, just not going to live my life in fear. I eat healthy, get plenty of exercise, no health problems. Tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone. Enjoy the gift of today.
I don't disagree with intelligent people making sensible choices but it's not an ideal world. In a truck alone its just stupid but I wear one walking around the neighbourhood as kids see me wearing it and they follow the example. The meanest guy around following the rule makes it easier for them to get past peer pressure. I don't know how broad you are but you know what its like to be a walking WMD and feared/admired just a bit by the kids. If people take them off and put them on passing groups when exercising etc. That's OK just remembering to do this reliably becomes very unreliable as you go below IQ 90 (and thats a hell of a lot of people) I choose to help the group though yeah, I will remove it for comfort when out of sight.
