Factory after factory that manufactures military equipment in Russia is closing down after Putin's Kremlin shortchanges them financially on the provided equipment and the factories are unable to be profitable, pay their bills & their employees. Vital Russian military factory closes after Putin refuses to pay going rate for tech Company responsible for producing microelectrics for fighter jets had mounting debts and unpaid bills https://www.themirror.com/news/world-news/vital-russian-military-factory-closes-1227981 Vladimir Putin's attempted invasion of Ukraine has suffered another significant setback as one of Russia's key factories supporting the war effort was forced to shut down due to overwhelming debts. Optron-Stavropol, situated in the southern city of Stavropol, was tasked with manufacturing microelectronics for aircraft and military equipment, including power semiconductors for MiG, Su, Tu, Sukhoi Superjet, and MS-21 aircraft. However, The Moscow Times reports the factory has halted operations due to losses amounting to almost $2million incurred from fulfilling state orders and accumulating debts. These losses are reportedly a result of the Russian government's reluctance to pay market prices for military technology - sometimes offering less than the actual production cost. Optron-Stavropol CEO Pavel Bondarenko disclosed that despite the cost of producing one diode being 3,600 roubles ($46), the Ministry of Defence would only pay 2,600 roubles ($33), reports the Express. Consequently, Optron sustained substantial losses while awaiting almost $3m in unpaid orders. This led to the cessation of production in March, followed by the freezing of its accounts by June as arrears began to accumulate due to salaries, taxes, and utility bills. Optron is unable to independently set prices, as pricing is determined by the military under the law on state defense orders. Other manufacturers have also reported losses due to similar practices. The company's collapse seems to have been triggered by an inability to set independent pricing, a plight shared with other Russian producers who report similar losses due to such restrictions. Despite a slew of nine official engagements with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and an exhaustive probe by the Prosecutor General's Office, authorities maintain that they've detected no illicit behavior in the company's operations. Yet behind the veneer of legality, conditions are grim. The embattled facility has been grappling with turmoil since 2016, and back in 2021 it rang the alarm bells, flagging the threat of an imminent cessation of operations. Amidst this chaos, US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his dedication to NATO's collective security clause amid concerns over Russian intimidation during his attendance at the summit in the Netherlands. Prior to touching down in the Netherlands on Tuesday, Mr. Trump had cast aspersions on the United States' fidelity to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which obliges members to support one another in the event of aggression. But by Wednesday, the US president articulated his support for that commitment. "That's why I'm here," professed Mr. Trump during his encounter with Prime Minister Dick Schoof of the Netherlands. "Why would I be here?". Concurrently, the alliance materialized one of the republican leader's key goals on Wednesday: a vow from NATO nations to enhance, in some cases substantially, their defense expenditure. "I've been asking them to go up to 5% for a number of years," stated Mr. Trump. "I think that's going to be very big news."
If I were Vlad I would be worried about seeing Trump- as he did today- rant on at length about how much he respects the Europeans, with the exception of Spain. One of Vlad's handles on Trump has been that the Europeans hate/hated him and so he gets kissy faced with Putin who shows Trump fake love and plays him. But I couldn't believe my ears earlier. Trump ranting on about much he respects Europeans for loving and wanting to protect their countries. Not sure where Trump is these days. He has separated from JD, Don Jr., Bannon a bit - the ones who say Europe no longer matters because the Gulf States have the dollars now. The sanctions issue is a mixed bag. Yes there is the argument that sanctions have not worked. But there is also the argument that sanctions were never applied in a way that went to Russia's jugular. And Vlad knows that. If Trump ever- and the issue is right before him now- put an end to the schizo game of allowing the Europeans to still purchase Russian oil and gas right in the middle of a war with them, then Russia's fragile little economy would be fragile-ER. No it would not collapse but it would continue to descend below the level where it could prowl around the world and do as much damage as it used to. Just as happened to Iran. Iran and Russia have foaming-at-the mouth loyalists but in the end their proxies and warlords need to see big bucks to keep foaming. And there are not a lot of extra bucks in Russia and Iran for the crazies.
