SouthAmerica: Reagan spent a ton of money on defense a lot more than necessary for defense purposes – what do we have to show for today for all that investment?

A bunch of old and obsolete technology – old jets that are probably sitting in the Arizona desert waiting to be turned into scrap metal?

    And what else?

The one thing we have for sure – the outstanding US government debt related to all that spending and the annual interest in the billions that have to be paid year after year.

In interest alone on its growing outstanding debt the US government spends on an annual basis over $ 300 billion dollars on interest payments – and as the debt continues to grow and interest rates continue to increase – the annual interest to be paid related to all this debt will take larger and larger slices of the annual US government budget.

Reagan wasted a ton of money that instead could have been spent on a number of things related to US infrastructure and be useful for many generations to come. (Bridges, tunnels, electric power grid, water system of major cities, and so on…)

Yeah I am bummed about that peace dividend and 15 years without being attacked, in which I traveled to many countries, surfed almost every day for five years, then made 6 figures for 5-6 years daytrading and bought a nice house in carlsbad ca.

too bad Reagan spent all that dough and cracked the communist system apart. I sure hated sleeping without the threat of an enemy.

I sure hated him telling gorbachev to tear down that wall after his spending weaked the image and power of the Soviets military leaders. yeah too bad for all those eastern block peoples as well.

yeah that spending on star wars weapons and fiber optics sure hurt us financially, even though revenues went way up after his tax cuts.

yeah I much prefer the leadership of his predecessor who like you S.A. liked to sing the praises of third war backwaters and socialists.

    SouthAmerica: Reply to Jem

You are naïve if you believe that you were able to accomplish all the things that you listed because Ronald Reagan spent so much money on defense.

I am glad that you had a nice time during all this period. But….

Good strategy – he added so much debt for future generations to pay for it at a time when his enemy – the Soviet Union - was going out of business……

Remember the story does not end where you want – in 1989.

The story continues – today the United States pays more in interest alone on its outstanding debts from the Reagan years than China is spending in building its military of the future.

Today, as China builds the military of the future – the United States is stuck paying interest on the money borrowed from its unnecessary military spending of the past.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

  4. Interesting articles SouthAmerica.

A little too much on the democrat propaganda for my taste... if you ask me democrats = republicans, History shows us that empires fall, no matter who´s in power...

Empires fall and empires rise from their ashes.

I don´t think Iraq alone is going to bring down the US economy {and yes, Im bearish on the US$}.
I think that this empire is collapsing in a way similar to Rome... a giant unable to fight a cloud of mosquitoes.

I don´t know when this is going to happen, and I hope it doesn´t happen soon... but it´s inevitable in the long term. Death is a part of life.

America is INFECTED from within. It does'nt need an external enemy. The neo-conservative ROT has entrenched itself and is slowly rotting away the whole system by corruption and cronyism.

Watch these videos. The videos are a good starter on what neo-conservatism really is.

  6. This whole Planet is in a state of decay along with the whole Universe.

So what's the big deal? No one can stop it.

Quit worrying to death over it and live while you can.

No one can save this Planet or the Universe. It's toast eventually.

    Cold, spread out frozen toast...:p

SouthAmerica: I am an independent, but to vote independent it is like throwing away your vote - since they don't have a chance to win an election.

We need very badly in the United States a major 3rd party to compete with the democrats and republicans, since the only choice that we have today in the United States is to vote for: “Dumb and Dumber”

Your boyfriend called and he wants you to do what? :D

Are you making an attempt at humor ? It must be some inside homosexual joke. I'm not a homosexual, so I'm afraid I'll have to pass on your funnies. In the meantime try and educate yourself by watching the video links I posted. Instead of being part of the cancer, try and be part of the cure. :D
