The million that showed up heard this, not Islamofacist thought: Ostensibly, the message of the Nation of Islam (as presented by Farrakhan at the Million Man March) is one of social atonement and reconciliation; it is a call for the black community to strive for moral and ethical superiority. Farrakhan called the audience to give up drugs, prostitution, and violence, and to commit to improving themselves âspiritually, morally, mentally, socially, politically, and economicallyâ (1995). These are laudable concerns that should transcend race. If lower crime rates, higher economic productivity, and an over-all improvement in the quality of life for African-Americans result from the efforts of Farrakhan, then all people will have reason to rejoice. In 1999, Farrakan said: "Twenty-one thousand five hundred and ninety-seven Americans were murdered in 1999, and this was 7 percent lower than in 1994. So when the black men gathered on the mall and took that pledge, the murder rate among us dropped 7 percent."
