The majority of the workers DID stay in the United States and became the first generation of Chinese immigrants in United States. They are the ancestors of the majority of the Chinese in America. Yes they faced much discrimination and social isolation and low wages while working on the railroads. The pay and working condition did later on get improved after a massive strike by the Chinese workers. Btw, unions were originally created by Irish to fight labor discrimination, then went on to discriminate against others trying to join the unions to get into jobs.
