The 16% solution and bye-bye trading

  1. andrasnm,

Best of luck with your new ventures. I would like to thank you for all your constructive participation on this board. I've learned a lot from you and I'm sure others have as well.

All the "rich" people I know have made their money in real-estate. I also know a few lucky people who made fortunes on being in early in startups, but that is generally the exception. Most entrepreneurs and early employees do not make the killing many suspect - the VCs tend to run with most of the early money.

Andras-done the real estate thang-mostly income prop and rehabbing houses. For sure there is money there, and I'm not done yet-but check out the associated headaches. Every business has them-you just have to check and see if you want to handle those relating to real estate. Some of the things that I don't miss are LAWYERS, real estate agents, insurance agents, municipal buildings offices and ordinances, emergency calls from tenants, collecting rents, and did I mention LAWYERS. For me trading is an escape from a lot of this. Just something to think about. For anyone in this room, I didn't intend to say anything derogatory about those in the legal field--NOT!!!

Andrasm, how long have you been trading full time.
2mo, 2yr? Why are you thinking of changing your focus. Is it money, stress, inconsistency, peer pressure?

  4. For full time (commodity, stocks, poker :)
Most traders I suspect have a little of a "rogue" in them, a gambler. A few are rich and trading is a "way to become rich" and then you become an "investor" of stocks , RE, art, cars etc.
This point in life I'll take some easier bets than outfox the foxes
of Wall Street, that's all. Same in principle as I don't play poker in
the Casinos now when it's full of sharks but used to make good living when it started out.

I have really wondered about online gambling. How could you ever trust it? Couldn't a good hacker figure out some way to get in there and look at all the hands? Did you make any money at it?
Whenever I get the urge to play I have to go to Vegas or Atlantic City. It would be great to be able to play online but I doubt I could ever overcome my doubts.

  7. Funny you should ask...
Yes, but Paradise poker and ultimatebet (the two good ones)
Paradise 20/40 is harder than LA. The creme de la creme play
at two tables sometimes with 5-10k in front of them - not easy
to beat. Also collusion is a problem and I would never play big
bet anymore there. (all you need is a cell or instant messaging)
to collude. I play only heads-up and even that is for modest
    (small stakes 3-6, 5-10).

  8. Based on my modest understanding of economics and markets, a 16% return only exists if there is a comensurately high risk.

Tell this to the credit card companies with cash advace 24%
and banks with fees high as usury. Also negative rate for
some banks i.e. they charge you to hold onto your money.

This is legalese, government created stuff nothing to do with
basic economics, capitalist system and logic.
