  1. Hey all,

Anyone know of a good place to learn more about this game? I know how to play, and I'd like an intermediate-level source for getting better.

Some friends of mine here have a weekly game and I want to join, but I'd like to learn more before I start...

    Thanks!

I picked up a book this weekend called "Telling Lies and Getting Paid" by Michael Konik. It is a compilation of various gambling stories and sort of a fun read. He also wrote "The Man with 100K Breasts" which was pretty good.

Anyhow, he does mention a few books on poker. Winning Poker, Hold 'em for advanced players (Mason Malmuth, David Sklansky and Ray Zee)

He also says that Doyle Brunson's Super/System, 500 pages is considered a bible, like Edwards and Magee I suppose.

Last year I read a book called "Trading, Sex and Dying" which I think was a carbon copy of "Poker Sex and Dying" by Jeul Anderson which gave some good blow by blow stuff on reading people by the various personality types.

I think Bill Bennett is coming out with something on gambling away 8 million with the proceeds of a book on morality that should be a fine read as well.

  6. Sklansky's HPFAP is really the only book you need to read.
It is THE hold 'em book.

Playing for play money will make you a WORSE poker player, not a better one. The more you play at 'yahoo games', the worse of a poker player you'll become. Anyone who thinks I'm wrong on this point, is someone I'd love to get in a high stakes heads up match.

In order to attain the practice you need before moving to the $30-$60 tables, you can just play micro stakes games.

    www.pokerstars.com has .02/.04 games.

    A very helpful resource, is

http://www.twodimes.net/poker/ . They have a free poker odds calculator.

    Good luck...

  7. Have you seen the movie "Rounders" with Matt Damon and Ed Norton? Great movie about the world of no limit hold'em. There are many parrallels to stock trading in it as well.

  8. Here's a poker links page, you can find more links through those links . . .

Holdem is a good introduction to poker. But once you get familiar with it, learn the other varieties: Omaha, 7 Card Stud, Draw, and more. You'll probably like some of them better than Texas Holdem.

the World Poker Tour on the travel channel? On Wednesday nights (6 - 8 PM here in Hawaii, so your time would be ???) there is some very entertaining (and educational) footage of some world class (Texas Hold 'Em) poker tournaments...this week they will be in a casino somewhere in Europe, so don't know if it will be Texas Hold 'Em, but may be interesting to watch anyway.....

  10. I second that book.
