A youth pastor and school chaplain described as an inspirational leader has been identified as the man killed by a shark while on holiday with his family.

Luke Walford, 40, was reportedly bitten on the neck by a shark while spearfishing at the weekend in central Queensland.

Emergency services were called to Humpy Island, in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park, about 18km off the central Queensland coast, on Saturday following reports a man had been attacked.

Despite efforts by paramedics, Walford succumbed to his injuries just before 6pm.

Walford was a youth pastor for the Cathedral of Praise and school chaplain at Heights College in Rockhampton.

The college said the school chaplain had impacted so many lives over more than a decade.

“This loss leaves a profound void in the heart of our Heights College community and beyond.

“Chappy Luke, as he was known as, was not just a spiritual leader but also a role model for our young people. He was a living example of humility, kindness, and unwavering faith.

“Whether it was on the handball court, at the chess table, or simply chatting with students during lunch sharing his wealth of wisdom, he always made time for them.

His ability to connect with every individual, regardless of age or background, was truly remarkable.

“As we grieve this heartbreaking loss, we hold onto the legacy he leaves behind — a legacy of love, faith, and selfless service.

Queensland Member for Rockhampton Donna Kirkland said Walford was a “wonderful man” lost in tragic circumstances.

“A family friend, not only to my own family but countless others. He was an inspirational leader as a children’s and youth pastor,” she said in a statement.

“My prayers and heartfelt condolences are with his beautiful family and indeed the many who will be devastated, as I am, at this news.”

Local member Nigel Hutton also sent his well wishes to the family.

“The thoughts and prayers of our community go out to the Walford family,” he said.

There have been at least four other shark attacks in Australian waters in 2024, according to the Australian Shark Incident Database.

They include a woman who suffered significant injuries to her leg from a shark bite while snorkelling in the ocean off Mackay in October, and a woman who was badly wounded after being bitten on the leg while swimming in Elizabeth Bay in Sydney Harbour in January.

Jesus wanted this guy to die because Jesus wanted to teach some lessons.

‘He confessed everything’: Jehovah’s Witness elders ignored child sexual abuse allegations

By Amber Schultz January 4, 2025
    https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...sexual-abuse-allegations-20250103-p5l1wx.html

A woman’s reports of sexual assault at the hands of her stepfather were ignored for decades by church leaders, according to court documents.
Between 1980 and 1983 the victim, then aged between 13 and 16, was sexually assaulted by her stepfather, who was aged between 28 and 31. The family were practising members of the Jehovah’s Witness Church.

The man admitted the abuse occurred “dozens of times”, escalating in seriousness, as the girl lay in her bed at her mother and stepfather’s house in NSW, and once when she was sleeping in a tent with her stepbrothers.
Her mother forced her to move out following the final instance of abuse. The victim said the offender lied to her family and made her out to be a “homewrecker”.

In 1989, six years after being forced out of her home and after the church had appointed a new body of elders, the girl told church elders about her stepfather’s abuse.
The man denied the abuse and the church failed to report it to authorities.

The woman reported the abuse again to church elders in 2000. This time, the man “confessed everything” to them, the court said. The elders contacted the girl, advising her that her stepfather had been removed from his position within the church.
It was another 23 years until he was charged: In July 2023, the man pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual abuse. Now in his early 70s, last month he was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment with a six-year non-parole period.

The prosecution said the man had limited remorse and insight. It said he had told a psychologist his crimes were an “overstep” and “selfish”. He said he assumed his young stepdaughter was “reciprocating” as she didn’t lock the door or complain.
The woman’s victim impact statement, read by her husband to the court, outlined how her stepfather’s abuse and lies to her family and the church affected her life. The woman self-medicated with drugs and alcohol, and she has been diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Sorry will never, ever repair the damage you did to a young girl and the trauma you caused me. You had everyone think I was a liar and a homewrecker. You disgust me. I don’t know how you lived with this. Actually, I do know; it’s your arrogance that got you through and your smugness,” her statement read.
In his sentencing, Judge Grant Brady, SC, criticised the church for failing to report the crimes, calling it “lamentable”.

Brady said the offender lived a comfortable family life while the woman suffered.
“[His] lies made her a helpless, sad and a very angry young teenager who was not believed. She bravely persisted to bring about justice. She has experienced nightmares, flashbacks, and feelings ofabandonment,” he said.

“The offending was predatoryandinvolvedongoing abuse against a vulnerable child. It was a gross breach of trust.”
The man will be eligible for parole in June 2029.

Linda De Sousa Abreu: Prison guard filmed having sex with male inmate in his cell is jailed for 15 months
Lettice Bromovsky, Megan Howe and Arthur Parashar Daily Mail January 7, 2025

A married prison officer who was filmed having sex with an inmate was yesterday jailed for 15 months.

Linda De Sousa Abreu, 31, had previously admitted misconduct and abusing the public’s trust after an X-rated clip in a jail cell went viral on social media.

The footage showed a prison officer in uniform having sex with inmate Linton Weirich, 36, as her discarded radio crackled with messages from colleagues at Wandsworth Prison.

De Sousa Abreu, born in Venezuela, has a daughter with her husband.

She appeared in the dock at Isleworth Crown Court for sentencing wearing a grey pin-striped blazer over a white shirt and spoke only to confirm her name.

Judge Martin Edmunds KC said De Sousa Abreu compromised her role as a prison officer, undermined discipline and put officers at increased risk.

Yesterday she admitted having sex with the same prisoner at the jail in south-west London on another occasion.

She was also caught on her own body camera performing a sex act on him on June 25 last year, the same day the original sex tape was filmed.

De Sousa Abreu, who claimed she has “found faith in God” since the incident, has an OnlyFans account where she shares explicit content.

Weirich was in jail after being sentenced to four-and-a-half years last June for burglary after he stole £65,000 worth of valuables from a safe in a flat in Kensington, west London.

Eloise Marshall KC, prosecuting, said De Sousa Abreu had asked for two matters to be “taken into consideration” by the judge when he passed sentence.

“The first one is one previous occasion of sexual intercourse with the same prisoner,” she added.
The second was on June 25 last year and also relates to Weirich, the court was told.

Ms Marshall said it “relates to oral sex” and was “partially recorded on her own prison issued body-worn camera”.

De Sousa Abreu, a Portuguese passport holder, has one previous conviction from 2014 which had “no relevance” to this case, the court heard.

In a statement written after her arrest, she claimed to have been “terrified for her safety” prior to the offences.Ms Marshall said this account was “false” and De Sousa Abreu had “never made any complaints to the prison”.

Wandsworth governor Andrew Davy said in a statement read in court: “It has taken many years for female staff to be respected and treated professionally in a male-dominated environment.

“The action of this defendant has undone years of positive and rewarding prisoner interactions in less than a day.”

Rajiv Menon KC, defending, said De Sousa Abreu has “taken full responsibility for her actions”.

He added a psychiatric report stated she has a “personality disorder” and ADHD which makes her a “highly impulsive and reckless person who tends to act without considering the consequences”.

De Sousa Abreu, of Fulham, south-west London, had admitted a charge of misconduct in public office last July.

It is a common law offence with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
