I don't understand the logic for building the factory in Germany for several reasons. 1. Entrenched union labor. Auto unions in Germany are not only about workers protection, they're also about protecting their industry and the country. I have concerns about allegiance from the labor force. 2. Europe's highest labor cost. Yes, Germans know how to build cars and Tesla will benefit from their expertise, notwithstanding their questionable allegiance noted above, but that comes at a particularly high cost. 3. Government interventions. While Tesla will employ a lot of labor and make government look good, the fact remains that Germans are nationalists. They will support and protect their brands any way they can. Permits will take longer to get, inspections will be more frequent, penalties will be more severe. Government and union work hand in hand in Germany, with a common goal to make Germany and its businesses stronger. Tesla is a humiliation. Musk will gain automotive manufacturing knowledge but Germany will gain EV expertise which is more valuable in my opinion. Musk could have set up shop in Romania, where many European car manufacturers have built factories for a reason.
Step 1. Move to Germany Step 2. Steal the best talent from the other automakers Step 3. Watch the other automakers collapse from lack of talent Step 4. Profit.
