DJ US House Votes To Cut Insurers' Medicare Payments By $47B (Not rated) 44 minutes ago WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Health insurers would see their Medicare plan
payments cut by $47 billion over the next five years under legislation opposed
by the White House but approved Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives
    by a vote of 225 to 204.

Publicly traded companies offering such plans include Humana Inc. (HUM),
UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH), Aetna Inc. (AET), Healthspring Inc. (HS), Tenet
Healthcare Corp. (THC) and Cigna Corp. (CI).

Experts on both sides of the debate say the cuts would likely cause a major
contraction of the Medicare market for insurers. Particularly hard hit would be
the market for private fee-for-service plans, participation in which exploded
after insurer payment increases were enacted in 2003.

One analysis predicts insurers would be forced to stop offering the plans in
22 states. Enrollment in another 17 states would fall by an average of 80%,
according to the report by Emory University professors Adam Atherly and Ken
Thorpe released by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

  6. I think that the California Universal Health proposal could be a positive for companies like THC. Given the steadily increasing levels of uncompensated care hospitals are required to provide in their emergency rooms, reform is seen as positive. Because the hospitals have absorbed much of the cost of treating the uninsured historically, some level of provider tax will likely be levied, as proposed by Schwarzenegger.

In a health care conference a couple of months ago, the Chief Operating Officer of Tenet weighed in on the expected impact of the reform. He believed that because of the rising uncompensated costs, reform was seen as a positive for Tenet hospitals. Tenet has most of their hospitals located in California.

    Does this make sense?

  9. Maybe.

Looks to me like a half decade of Chinese water torture to shake out low hanging fruit in a NYSE stock. Principal shareholder is on the Forbes 400. I wonder how he got there.

You'll note the big move south (punctuated with a gap to serve as a moat) in late 2002. That's where the money was made. Would it be a revelation that gaps occur in BOTH directions? Medicare, being national in scope and with an inverted demographic pyramid "customer" pool would make for a great alibi(s)

Hmmm, base OR capitulation? Decisions decisions.

  10. Here's a more current chart.

    A little more compact.

Flirting with breaking a 5 year downtrend line. NYSE specialist flush with inventory.

$5 is a threshold for institutional "accpetibility" and................. for mousehouse marginability. I know Long horns can relate to that.
