she did an absolutely legitimate thing, she also made a difficult decision under pressure, and she most likely took into account public opinion (like every politician) when she arrived at her decision, in the exact same way as the governor of Alabama and those of other states. The issue isn't that Haley chose to remove the flag, but that she did so only after the left made the issue suddenly about race, based on the recent tragedy. For 150 years prior to that, the issue was never about race but southern heritage. The inability to accept any interpretation but their own, and the continuing drive to assert that decision on the rest of us is what is at the fundamental basis of the discontent.

civil rights abuses in the South were well accepted until the National guard moved in to protect those who demanded their civil rights. During all events when Blacks were spitted at, beaten, lynched, the confederate flag was nearby. Even in 2014/2015 each time right wing extremists and nazis march through Southern towns the confederate flag is hissed. Are you seriously suggesting anyone acted upon one deluded individual?
Tsing is all about freedom of expression, provided it either concurs with his own views or that no one does anything about it. For example, I don't recall him ever once criticizing either Tgregg or Clubber Lang when they waxed poetic on the virtues of segregation. He just sat back, marveling at their glorious freedoms...
