Black Slave Owners in Charleston http://www.teachingushistory.org/lessons/BlackSlaveOwnersinCharleston.html "From the late 1700’s records show that there were free blacks living in South Carolina (Schweninger, 1990, 20). By 1860, there were thousands of “free persons of color” living in the state, and hundreds of them owned black slaves. " "Owning slaves offered the opportunity for economic advancement for blacks (Schweninger, 22). By the mid 1700’s, black artisans and shopkeepers owned slaves in the city, while free blacks also held slaves on farms in the country. In the city of Charleston, free blacks nearly monopolized the jobs of barbers, bricklayers, shoemakers, tailors and dressmakers. They prospered in their entrepreneurial jobs and were able to earn the capital needed to purchase slaves. " " They wanted to live the same life as whites, and they saw slaveholding as a way to become more equal with their white counterparts." "Interestingly enough, slaves reacted to ownership by black masters in the same ways that they did by white masters. They resisted their owners and were susceptible to dreams of freedom. The relationships between black masters and slaves were not smoother than those of slaves and white masters."
I see two people preaching hate here, db and FF. They are typical of many liberals. WTF business is it of people living in NYC or Canada if a state democratically chooses to honor its ancestors and history? But because the racial grievance industry constantly needs causes to exploit, every incident where a black comes out second best suddenly is evidence that slavery is one step from being reintroduced, and we all should bend over and grab our ankles.
Hasn't it been you saying the chief problem with democracy is that of two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner?
Exactly. The biggest reason for the Confederate Battle Flag not to fly over state capitals in the South is because THEY LOST. All the symbols of their rebellion should not be used as official symbols of government. Do we need to dig up William T. from his grave and send zombie General Sherman to go visit all the homes of the Confederate advocates in the South and provide them with a harsh reminder of why their flag should not fly in any official capacity.
I'll finish your message. 'Hey America, You Lost the war in Viet Nam. Take down that Viet Nam memorial!'
"It's one thing for sellers like Walmart and Amazon to stop carrying Confederate flags. It's another thing entirely for the largest single manufacturer of them to announce they're no longer making them at all." Oldest manufacturer stops production of Confederate flag http://wtop.com/business/2015/06/oldest-manufacturer-stops-production-of-confederate-flag/ ROSELAND, N.J. (AP) — The nation’s oldest and largest flag manufacturer has decided to stop making and selling the Confederate flag. Annin Flagmakers, in business since 1847, announced its decision Tuesday. Politicians always need a moral justification for war. Abolitionism was Lincolns. Think about it. Slavery was the norm, perfectly accepted and practiced throughout the entire world up until the Industrial Revolution. Once humans invented machines to do the work of other humans, suddenly people got moral about slave ownership and racism? Don't kid yourself. Had the combustion engine not been invented, we'd still have a race of slaves in the world today. That's the human heart. And for what it's worth, more indentured white slaves existed in America then black slaves. European whites sold themselves into slavery to escape grinding poverty and famine in Europe.
