OK the wealth tax doesn't appear to be a problem , in the canton of Geneva for ex. it is rather insignificant 0.00175 to 0.0045 % of assets, lowest under 103K, highest above 1.5M. The bottom line is if you are a foreigner you have to be absolutely sure that there is no taxation of your trading activity in the canton where you reside. But that info is not easily available. You will have to show proof of income when applying for residence or present a business plan if you intend to start a business. If you derive all or most of your income from trading, the cantonal immigration authorities will get all your account details. Switzerland being what it is I doubt that this is not promptly communicated to the tax authorities, they will know everything about your trading.
You overestimate swiss authorities... tax authorities in Switzerland are quite far away from an IRS-type power...
When you file your taxes, do you have to declare all your income including capital gains or you don't have to disclose capital gains? The Fribourg tax administration website says you declare all your income when you file your tax return. It also adds that tax fraud, using falsified documents for ex. is a penal offence. http://www.fr.ch/scc/pp/default.htm
I have been told an asset manager is considered as a securities trader and liable to stamp duty, does that mean that traders have to pay stamp duty and what is that tax exactly?
I am looking for a studio in Vaud , been here for 3 weeks, the Swiss are very nice but noone , noone will rent me a place. Even after I get the residence permit, I am not sure I will find anything, they want salary slips, they want a swiss background check even after I tell them I am an independent trader and have no salary and I have only been here for 3 weeks. They still ask for it, so stupid! Money abroad doesn' count, even if I had a milion dollar account they wouldnt care I think, Switzerland signed bilateral accords on free movement of persons with the EU but the Swiss do everything to prevent foreigners to come here.
nonsense ... Foreign Population in Switzerland There are 1.4 millions foreigners living in Switzerland (20% of the total). They are an essential component of the economic and demographic balance of Switzerlandâs aging population. In fact, without its foreign residents, Switzerlandâs population would decrease by 7,500 every year through death and emigration. However, thanks to the foreignersâ higher birth rate, the total population is actually increasing. http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/swiss-business-guide/foreign-population.html
I am swiss and have the same problem. They don't want to rent you something as long as you don't have a SALARY. It has nothing to do with being a foreigner or not. By the way, most people haven't a clue of what a 'trader' is. Tell them you're a money manager. Another way to circumvent that would be to start a company (sarl, capital is 20000CHF) and give yourself a salary.
msfe, are you Swiss? I have heard from some Swiss people that indeed it remains difficult even for EU citizens to settle down in Switzerland because the Swiss don't want foreigners here. I can understand to a certain extent there are already a lot of people who came here apparently as asylum seekers , but as I said despite the fact that Switzerland has signed agreements to open its borders it is next to impossible to come here as a trader and set up shop quickly, for ex an asset manager needs to be registered with the professional body in his/ her canton but to be registered you need to have a Swiss or Swiss resident on the board of your company ! As for estate agencies requiring salary slips what do self employed people do then ? I think given the grim state of the job market helping selff employed people and entrepreneurs to start business in Switzerland will not hurt .
