First the government does not have laws, rules, regulations, handbooks, and manuals regarding which domestic organizations you can donate to or support. None of this is covered under ethics information. They set monetary limits on political donations from government employees -- not anything beyond this.

Hence one government entity firing a person for donating to a defense fund while other government entities do not -- is problematic.

Once again, he wasn't fired for donating. He was fired for what he wrote.

The Code of Conduct regulations and rules do dictate off duty actions. Generally speaking, you can't potentially diminish public trust in the agency etc. etc.

You keep bringing up donations. Again, the case was not about the donation. I say again, the case was not about the donation.

    See above regarding donations.

  3. Transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets, which shared the information from the data breach with journalists, also released the names of several donors, some of whom used their official email addresses to make the payments, The Guardian reports.

Kelly's official Norfolk Police email address was associated with one $25 donation to Rittenhouse's fund, made anonymously last September, according to The Guardian, which had access to the Distributed Denial of Secrets data.

Teen who shot dead two demonstrators against police brutality in Kenosha, Wis., could count on the support of ‘every rank-and-file’ law-enforcement officer, Virginia policeman William Kelly claimed.

You want to use a work email to make a donation to felony murderer and then claim all cops support this guy.... you are fired..... plain and simple.

Not sure why we are still discussing this or trying to defend the cop. A minor possessed a weapon... went across state lines and killed people. Why are police officers even getting involved in this kid's trial, that is not their job.

Did he use the work email for any correspondence on this donation? No he did not. He did not violate any policies about using a work email for personal business. He merely provided the email as a required identifier field required on the donor web-form. -- with the expectation that his donation would be anonymous.

  5. Look.... the officer works the city of norfolk and if he does something that tarnishes the image of the badge or is an appearnace of impropriety then he can be fired under various ethics and workplace rules.

Making a donation to the defense fund of a kid who committed felony murder is a terrible image for the police to display in front of its citizens and to even claim that all cops support it.....he needs to go. Plain and simple.

using his work email gives the impression that Norfolk Police support this donation and message. YES YOU CAN BE FIRED for using your work email for personal reasons that put out a bad image. His email and donation being anonymous is bullshit, his name and email are attached to the donation.

Well the fired officer is getting tens in thousands in donations after being fired for donating $25 to a legal defense fund.

Virginia officer fired after donating to Kyle Rittenhouse draws thousands in donations from Christian site

A former Virginia police officer who was fired after donating to a legal defense fund for Kyle Rittenhouse and expressing support for his actions has since drawn thousands in donations from supporters through a Christian crowdfunding site.

So far, a fundraiser set up through GiveSendGo has raised more than $46,000 for the former officer, William Kelly, with a goal of $50,000 in total.

The news comes a week after Kelly was fired from his job following reports of a data breach involving the same site that revealed the email addresses of donors who contributed to a legal defense fund for Rittenhouse.

Rittenhouse, a white man from Illinois, currently faces homicide and firearm charges after he was accused of fatally shooting two Black Lives Matters demonstrators at a protest sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis., in August. He was 17 at the time of the shooting and is now 18.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges earlier this year after previously arguing he had acted in self-defense during the protest.

His case gained national attention last year after a number of prominent conservatives threw support behind him while touting gun rights and as the country reckoned with race following months of protests ignited by the police killing of George Floyd.

Kelly was among those who made anonymous donations to the defense fund for Rittenhouse last year. The former officer also left a comment along with his donation expressing support for the then-teenager.

“God bless. Thank you for your courage. Keep your head up. You’ve done nothing wrong,” Kelly wrote in the comment. “Every rank and file police officer supports you. Don’t be discouraged by actions of the political class of law enforcement leadership.”

Reports that surfaced of the donation from earlier this month prompted calls for Kelly’s resignation soon after.

Officials said the former officer was eventually fired last week.

“I have reviewed the results of the internal investigation involving Lt. William Kelly,” Norfolk City Manager Chip Filer said in a statement obtained by local media. “Chief Larry Boone and I have concluded Lt. Kelly’s actions are in violation of City and departmental policies.”

“His egregious comments erode the trust between the Norfolk Police Department and those they are sworn to serve. The City of Norfolk has a standard of behavior for all employees, and we will hold staff accountable,” Filer also said.

Boone also released a statement regarding the matter at the time.

“A police department cannot do its job when the public loses trust with those whose duty is to serve and protect them,” he said last week. “We do not want perceptions of any individual officer to undermine the relations between the Norfolk Police Department and the community.”

  7. This is what we were saying the whole time.. his comments were so bad that he did not deserve to wear the badge anymore in that precinct...

What I would like to know is if the Christian organization only donates money to white causes..
