From Quora: What are the cleverest scams you have come across? Brian W Answered 22h ago Moviepass is good one. They started as a legitimate business in 2011, selling movie memberships for $50 a month. Very few people signed up and they lost a lot of money. Then suspiciously, a few months ago they lowered the price to $10 a month. It’s alleged that they dropped the price in order to trick millions of people into paying the fee, with no intention of delivering the service. AMC Theaters issued a public announcement warning people of the danger, explaining that it would be impossible for Moviepass to deliver. Moviepass mailed working debit cards to members of the media, so they would report that the service works. However, a quick online search shows thousands of paying customers saying they have not received their card, even after waiting a month. In summary, Moviepass has collected millions of dollars in membership fees, along with the personal information of everybody that signed up, without delivering anything to their customers. And because the fee was only $10 each, the vast majority of those people won't bother to file a chargeback, or do anything else about it. That's all profit. 1.3k Views · 61 Upvotes Upvote61Downvote Share Bookmark
Reminds me of when world spreads offered "spread free trading", no commission either, managed to dodge that one.
