Greetings, I am looking to come up with a portfolio of stocks that will do well if a large solar storm hits and fries part of the Grid. Companies that make electrical transformers etc⦠If a storm like 1859 hits again this would be huge. Any thoughts? http://www.history.com/news/2012/03/14/a-perfect-solar-superstorm-the-1859-carrington-event/
I am thinking electrical grid. It could take years to replace all the transformers. It is a long shot but we are in a high intensity cycle and it has happened before. I would like to be ready with a list.
You'd have a hard time owning stocks electronically or doing anything with them if the grid is down, so will the computer networks be. I'm not sure how many brokers are equipped with AM radio stations to receive orders. Currencies would devalue because of the chaos, so I'd say own gold, and agriculture. It all depends on the severity of the outage.
It need not be the end of the world. It could be localized to a content or portion like happened in Quebec in 1989. Could be Europe, Asia. A limited hit seems more likely than a total worldwide 1700s scenario.
