It is time to devive this valuable thread. Today's champ is: "indervidual." The Bronx spelling, perhaps? Written by a poster who appears to be a native speaker, or at least fakes it good.
The one that really pisses me off is when people say dribble when they mean drivel Because of course every simpleton that is pulled up on this claims to be aware of the word drivel but preffered to use dribble.. let me just say to those troglodytes and dolts YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ANYONE YOU MORON!
I got a kid in summer school (11th grade). The most recent assignment the teacher said it is ok to answer the questions in "text style". I had a good idea of what this meant but asked just to be sure. Yup, answer the question using the shorthand of text messaging. Math went bye bye with the use of calculator and dumbed down cash registers, say ta ta to spelling.
The most common reason that we do not grant interviews to otherwise qualified applicants at our company is because there is a spelling or grammatical error in their CV or cover letter. We use this screening process partly because we don't want employees who send illiterate e-mails to clients. Poor writing skills place us in a bad light. But there is also a belief within our organization that a sloppy CV indicates a sloppy worker. Since nearly everyone in our specialized mathematical field is foreign-born, we eliminate about 60-70% of CVs immediately in this way. Having dealt with many of these very smart people as clients, it's clear to me that they could improve their English skills; doing so would be less difficult than many other things they have already successfully accomplished. It's a mystery to me why people don't see that despite their technical expertise, these simple problems hold them back. ------------------ Dr cha, I read back a few posts and saw your reply. I had to print out the above and pass it out to my kids. Thanks.
Just now, "where" rather than "were", from an apparently native spicker. What kind of cross-wiring makes that happen? Does he write what instead of hat? Whet rather than wet? Comme c'est etrange!
Has anyone else noticed recent grammatical and spelling errors in the print Wall Street Journal? I have seen about a half dozen in the past month or so. I have subscribed for years and never noticed this before. Stosh
I knew I would be setting someone up for such a response.....you're welcome (as opposed to your welcome). By the way, anyone else notice how often people on TV pronounce et cetera (etc.) as ek cetera? Stosh
