I currently have Cox....thought about switching to fios, but I don't think fios is any faster than 25K/2k(cox). as far as trading, upload speed is just as important as download.....I really have no clue as to why roadrunner give you such lopsided numbers. But of course, all these DL/UL #'s don't mean anything when the mkt goes crazy and arca/nyse/esignal/your system lags........if you feel that your orders are not getting filled at the right prices, i'd look into fios(pay extra $30 or so to get 30k).
Yeah I have looked into fios. Unfortunately it is not available in my area yet. But it looks like it is going to blow away all of these connections 50Mbps DL/ 20 Mbps UL. I also have regular verizon DSL and called them after posting to find out about Fios, speeds, etc. The phone sales guy was able to upgrade me from my original DSL service to service that 7.6 MBps DL/ 3 MBps UL for free. Which is significantly faster then what I had through DSL. What I plan to do is get a load balancing router and run both connections thru to try to increase speeds. But la moral of the story is: If you think you have slow service, call your provider because they may be able to upgrade you to faster service. when the "standard" becomes faster, you still have to inquire to get the upgrade, it doesn't happen automatically.
Guys don't get hung up on raw throughput (i.e. "speed" = BPS). It's not as important as latency (i.e. "ping time" = mS) for trading. Lower latency is much more important that throughput for trading and online gaming (i.e. Unreal Tournament, not Poker). High throughput is important for downloading large files. Frequently you'll find that high throughput and low latency go hand-in-hand, but this isn't always the case.
I agree Steve. If you look at my current numbers thru time warner roadrunner, my ping speed is at 375ms, which tells me that the latency is rather high. Do you know if there is any way for me to reduce this? Is it possible via my end or simply a problem with my ISP? Would love to know. thx.

Again, you guys are missing the point here. You need to do a TRACE ROUTE to the server that you connect to for your quotes/trading. If you are based in NY and your trading server is in NY, then GREAT, but not everyone is that close geographically to their trading/quote server. Some of us have to travel clear across the country and hit all sorts of "congestion" that COMCAST or COX or any other broadband company has ZERO control over because those are leased broadband lines, and not part of their own network. Go into your DOS prompt and then type in the server's IP address after you type: tracert(space)12.269.137.45 Above is just an example.
