One of George Bush's biggest mistakes was to support this backstabber in his last primary, which he probably would have lost to Toomey if the White House had stayed out of it.
I desperately hope a real democrat can defeat him in the primary. I'd rather see Barny Frank in that seat than this weasel.
His switch was based on nothing more principled than a desperate desire to hang onto his seat. From the Post article:
"Because of the shrinking Republican vote in the state, Specter was seen as a dead man walking politically in the primary with polling showing him trailing Toomey by ten or more points. The bar for Specter to run as an independent was also extremely high due to the rules governing such a third party candidacy.
That left a Democratic candidacy as Specter's best option if he wanted to remain in the Senate beyond 2010."
My favorite republican senator will become a democratic one. Yes! That means there are no decent honorable republican senators left.
This breaks filibuster, so at this point the Dems can do anything they want and they need 0 Republican support. They now own it. No more excuse Obama. You own it pal.
I wonder if the democrats promised him no primary opposition? This guy's total lack of honor and gratitude are just staggering. He will fit right in with his new party.
He was trailing in the Republican primary by over 20% so he jumped ship to save his ass. He sold out his values to try to hold onto his Senate. It looks like Specter is a Democrat afterall.
The GOP is trying hard to become a permanent Southern-based minority party.
Moderates like Specter, Snowe, and Collins are clearly not welcome in the Republican party. I expect more to leave and head to the bigger, more tolerant tent on the other side.
Independents like me have increasingly fled the Republican party in recent years. I expect more to leave.
He left the party of pedophiles, confederate flag racists, corruption, incompetents and conspiracy lunatics.Smart move.
