Specialist vs. Generalist

  1. I'm wondering if there are others that have thought through whether to focus on specific sectors or be a generalist. Particularly those that trade solely on fundamentals.

I've been a successful REIT trader for many years and believe my expertise in the sector is my edge. Though I remain profitable, I'm finding fewer good opportunities these days and it has been difficult to put all my money to work (and remain reasonably diversified).

I'm considering going with a more generalist focus, but it seems hard to get a fundamental edge without being an expert in other sectors.

    Any thoughts?

  2. As your portfolio grows you will need knowledge of more sectors in order to engage your full capital. I would suggest you consider becoming a Generalist. But, not all at once.

In this economy, it gives you more flexibility.
