Oops. My bad.... it was Newt that said that. Is he any more reliable? ///Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) would be elected House speaker on Tuesday because "this is not a time for the House Republican Party to look childish and in disarray." /////
Newt - bless his little heart- has good perspective but in the end- and this is not necessarily a fault- he still functions like speaker by trying to rally votes when he speaks, versus predicting. Believe me he thinks it could go to a "make the speaker pro temp speaker for a temporary period" scenario and he has said that he supports that even though he does not want it to happen. But he would not be supporting that fallback position (which he is) unless he thought they might end out there. (Said with the caveat I mentioned before which is that I have sort of tuned out the issue for the last couple days, but that is what the general atmospherics look like to me.)
Let's see what the Jordan advocates are doing to overcome anyone resisting his election as speaker. This is what the Trumpy crowd does -- the standard operating procedure of authoritarians. Jim Jordan appears to fall short on votes in second round of voting for speaker https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/house-speaker-race-vote-10-18-23/index.html In the second round of voting, Rep. Jim Jordan appears to fall short on votes keeping House leadership in limbo. Jordan could only afford to lose four votes from Republicans in order to obtain the 217 votes necessary to win the speaker's gavel. He's already lost four votes. Remember: Members can change their votes up until the vote concludes.
The number of Republicans opposing in the second round rises to 22 from 20 in the first round. Not looking good for Gym Jordan. Jordan loses second round of speaker voting, with more Republicans voting against https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/house-of-representatives-to-vote-on-new-speaker House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan has lost the second round of voting to elect a House speaker -- after the number of Republicans voting against him increased. On Wednesday, 22 Republicans voted against Jordan, who was nominated by the GOP conference last week. He could lose only four votes. Four Republicans who voted for Jordan yesterday voted for someone else today: Reps Buchanan, R-Fla., Ferguson, R-Ga., Miller Meeks, R-Iowa, and Stauber, R-Minn. Jordan flipped 1 Republican to his column -- Rep LaMalfa, R-Calif. Other Republicans voted for lawmakers including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, former Speaker John Boehner and former Rep. Lee Zeldin. Jordan came 17 votes short of the 217 votes needed to win the gavel on Tuesday in the first round of voting after 20 GOP lawmakers voted against him. All Democrats voted for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Jordan will need to show some improvement today, or his bid could suffer further defections to other candidates. If he gains votes however, his supporters will say he has traction and there should be a third vote. Some Republicans are now looking at expanding the powers of interim House Speaker Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., after two weeks of gridlock without a leader -- an idea that has been gaining support amid the stalemate.
