Is the best source for free data still MetaTrader?

I would like to be able to download hourly data on the pairs tracked by my broker, each night at 9PM EST, for use with an automated trading system.

Last year the best way to do this was to use MetaTrader's 30-day trial, and renew it every 30-days. Their software has a fairly easy way to export to ASCII.

Is there a free (or cheap) source for hourly data that I could access via an API or ASCII download?

    thx

Anybody know of any good Forex data sources?

  3. A demo a/c with Oanda would give you live intra-day data in different time-frames

p.s. Not sure if you can download that data in ascii format. Suggest you check with Oanda if interested.

I am able to download daily EOD data through their FxHistory page. I am looking for something I can access progammatically. I will email them, maybe they have an API for geeks. Thanks!

Take a look in Forex Practice - they give history of major currencies for the last 2 years detailed by the minute. Maybe you can test your system on their platform.
