Because it is not wrong to examine closely groups that are seeking tax exempt status yet have names with politically meaningful terms. And the more rabid the term, like tea party, the more examination is warranted.

And how did the tea party become a rabid term? Was it the left wing bloggers in forums like this attacking them? Was it left wing politicians (and a few traitor rinos) including the prez himself, who once called them tea baggers? Was it the mainstream media marching in lockstep with the left wing lines of thought about them? Clearly this movement was a threat to the left wing powers (and some on the right). Shall I go on? If you really don't know (which I'm sure you do), read "Rules for Radicals" for starters.

And some wonder why the perceived enemies of the left were targeted.[IMG]

I am admittedly assuming that the data the Propublica site has published is correct. I have no reason to doubt it, as they did an investigation of both the expenditures of these organizations and their IRS applications. In fact, the IRS was not supposed to release at least some of the applications that they gave to Propublica, because those applications had not yet been approved. I'm guessing that this may be one of the reasons some of the IRS employees have been reluctant to talk, since they must have realized, at least after the fact, that they had screwed up. Apparently IRS rules are that the applications are not in the public domian until they have been approved.

Propublica turned up a number of clear cut cases of perjury by these organizations. However, did they examine all 312 applications from groups at both ends of the political spectrum? I'm certain they couldn't have, and didn't. But, nevertheless, of those 65 or so that they did get a hold of, they were virtually all breaking the rules!

The best thing for you to do would be to go to the Propublica site and check out their investigative reports for yourself. They are quite detailed, and it seems they paint a reliable picture of what is really going on with this 501c(4) category when it comes to applications from political organizations. These organizations obviously know they don't qualify, but the incentive for them to try is to get that IRS letter so they can assure their donors that their names won't be released. This, I have learned, is essential, if they are to be successful in fund raising from certain donors.

Lot of this trouble would be solved by putting the Koch brothers, and their ilk, in front of a firing squad. Or overturning Citizens United. Corporations are NOT people.

  8. piezoe,

Could you give me the link to the propublica article that you are so impressed by? I will read it, even though the whole argument is a classic after the fact rationaliation.

I have little regard for propublica, since they were part of the scheme. You mention casually that some documents were leaked to them. You don't mention that they forwarded them on to other soros groups who used them to torment donors who under the law were entitled to confidentiality.

To me that's not just a "screw up". It's evidence of a conspiracy. I recall when there were breaches of confidentiality for items like Bill Clinton's passport file, there was a hell of a brouhaha, with special counsel being appointed , people getting fired, etc. Same with CIA desk jockey Valery Plame. Her identity became compromised through her husband's boffoonery, yet an independent counsel was appointed and ruined a guy's life.
