You were perfectly willing to assume Nixon did.

I don't have to rewrite it as I don't get it from weblogs. I was there.

    That's absurd.

You can either agree to the facts or re-write history to agree with your perspective.

There is very little contention among historians or political scientists that President Clinton enacted the largest cuts to Great Society programs.

I recognize that it is inconvenient that the facts do not align with the fairy tale that you are trying to weave.

Keep in mind that Clinton ran for office on the platform of enacting this welfare reform. He was the driver of it.

And Congress was an unwilling participant? Don't be absurd.

Congress... both Democrats and Republicans voted in support of welfare reform. However the entire initiative was started and driven by President Clinton and was part of his platform while running for office. This was not a welfare reform act that Congress shoved on the president.

Not much for history, are you?

But rather than go over every single GS program and their individual fates under each successive president after Johnson, why not engage in something more productive and come up with a list of all those reasons why the poor should vote Republican? This I'm looking forward to.

Why should the poor vote Republican? The policies of the Democrats have trapped the poor in the ghetto with failing family structures living on hand-outs while impoverished. This is even more true in large cities with Democratic administrations.

The poor should vote rep for two reasons: trickle down, and "the rising tide".

Actually I do not think that trickle down and rising tide works.

I believe a reform of the tax system and the welfare system will help the poor. Keep in mind that any reform will need to keep benefits in place while recipients are moved towards being productive members of society. "Workfare" started under Clinton embodied many good concepts to make this happen - the problem is that workfare has been scaled back greatly.
