Sleep Can Often Be Elusive

  1. After seeing your post about it, I read that the normal dose is in the 3-5-gram range. So you find the smaller dose to be sufficiently effective? If so, then I should probably take even less, since I'm a lot smaller than you are.

I am 235 so you'll have to tinker with it. I would start with 5g on a weekend and see how groggy you are the morning after.

Re: melatonin. The idea is that it's not dose dependent. I know it is. There is a feedback mechanism (it's a hormone) but it's not as though it's harmful. I would up the mela to 5mg as grogginess is not evident.

Glycine will make you groggy as you increase. Best to take an hour before bed.

  3. I just bought some glycine at a local supplement store that sold the same brand as Amazon.ca, and at the same price:

It has the texture and taste of sugar. Are all glycine supplements from the same source and sweet?

Yeah, it's weakly sweet and hydrophilic so it mixes with everything. I took it one night and then got a call for an airport pickup for one of my kids and i was 50/50 whether I should have driven. It's great stuff.

Rule of thumb. If you aren't sleepy 30 mins after taking the glycine then take 50% more.

  6. Good to know. Thanks for the heads-up.

@Frederick Foresight I'm very sensitive to melatonin, 1-2.5 is plenty but my mother in law needed 10mg+ to feel it. If I take even 5mg, I would be in the mood to nap all day. You are likely to get enhanced dreams, not nightmarish but vivid, these can be very attention grabbing at first but they do fade. My wife falls asleep in seconds without anything but the odd time she will take melatonin to get a more interesting dreamscape.

  8. Nothing wrong with enhanced dreaming. But even at 5 mgs, my sleep has still been somewhat fitful. Better, but not great. So dem’s reference to glycine got me interested. I’ll see how the 5mg of melatonin + 5 grams of glycine combo works for me tonight. I will risk being drowsy tomorrow. Not a big incremental risk, since fitful sleep often amounts to the same outcome.

As an aside, my go-to science guy said he tried glycine but it didn’t do anything for him. I asked him about dosage and he advised that 3-5 grams is his understanding of the standard dose. Since he didn’t think it would do any harm, my only downside is the cost of product.

I will report on how it goes.

  9. The instructions on the container suggest 3 scoops of 5 grams a day!

I had one 5-gram scoop last night, along with 5mg of melatonin, and I did sleep somewhat more soundly, but I still had to get out of bed a few times because of all the fluids I consume during the day. I upped my already significant water intake after starting 5 grams of creatine a day just over a month ago. Now that I assume I'm saturated with the CM, I will back off a bit on the water. (I only gained a couple pounds, at most. On the plus side, no bloating.) I will also cut the CM to about 3 grams a day, because I understand that the maintenance level is about 3-5 grams. So since I'm a smaller guy, I imagine I only need the smaller dose.

I didn't feel any groggier than I normally do upon waking. Therefore, I will continue with a 5-gram scoop of glycine for the next few days, see how it goes, and then maybe back off a couple of grams or so in search of the sweet spot. Depending how it goes, I may even attempt to reduce the melatonin at some point.

A number of sources recommend consulting with a doctor before taking glycine as a supplement. I wonder why that is since the body produces about 3 grams of it a day, but studies reportedly suggest that a daily intake of 10-15 grams to optimal. I'm guessing most people do get that much in their daily diet.

  10. Since we're talking about sleep, even though I never feel I get enough, and it rarely even gets to the 7-hour mark, my blood pressure remains on the lower side. This morning just after 5AM:

I can never get it that low during the day, and I even have white coat hypertension in the doctor's office,
