Guys that have been married for over 10 years ( in California ) and who have married women that have NO careers or one's that do not generate a decent amount of income are just asking for financial ruin when it comes time for the proverbial . . . She makes more than three times the average household income for an American. She still has a job. It seems as if this is a self inflicted situation to me.

its absolutely 100% self inflicted--- however, its very difficult to go backwards, when your entire life was going upwards. habits are difficult to break regardless of cost.
