Options expiry most certainly weighed on the market all day and then a late relief rally is pretty standard ( most expiring option holders get out by 3 or 3:30 pm ). I used to trade options heavily the monthlies tend to force many stocks against trend on expiry day. Monday's following often open up higher if no other overriding news occurs.
