The very fact that this is being discussed on ET lends credence to the terrorists' goals .......this is their gameplan, to have people living in a constant state of fear, wondering when "the next hit" will be, or "is an anniversary attack coming". It plays right into their hands.

If you want to fight back, don't go on public message boards whining "are we going to get hit?????" They are laughing maniacally over this type of fear mongering amongst our own people and country. If you are scared....they've already won.

  3. There is down side of rate cut may hold off consumer spending money right after big drop of market; people tends to wait for more rate cut later; why rush in for one cut? Anyway September ; October and early November are not great month for retailers.

I think that fed may hold its FF rate; and cut another 25bp of discounted window in coming meeting.

What terror attacks; i didn't see any terror attacks. But I saw a lot imbeciles drivers on highway; and i scared every time i saw one.

  4. bin laden was a great asset to the CIA, I;m sure he's enjoying his CIA pension now.

Much as the US is currently funding and arming terror groups in Iran in order to help destabilize it.

    Facts.

  5. A likely scenario could be Ben gives the public and media what they want and shut them up with an overall .25 cut. But at the same time, raise the temporary discount window where it was before Aug. 17th and create a push in a way.

Anyway you look at it, expect no dramatic rise either way on that date with the numbers already baked in.

Since oversea markets know how to protect their currencies and inflation, I will be anticipating a rate rise late Sept. early October from B of J or ECB . They are obviously waiting for the US to play out this debacle before they take action. This will be good for global market bears and a new push downward. Whats Japan interest rate at .50%???????

I'm more inclined to think its in anticipation of a very unlikely FED rise or to a lesser extent a big fall out from no action, with perhaps some betting on more sub-prime and credit concerns in the two weeks which are about to lead up to the theoreical no cut decision.

These option expiry dates are only a few days after the decision too don't forget.

Anticipating the timing of terror attacks does not appear realistic; that is surely an ongoing factor in any hedging decision.

Three held in Germany over terror plot

    By Hugh Williamson in Berlin

    Published: September 5 2007 10:21 | Last updated: September 5 2007 10:21

German security forces have prevented a terror attack in Germany that could have been more deadly than the Madrid and London bombings, top security officials said on Wednesday.

Police on Tuesday arrested three men who had planned simultaneous car bomb attacks against US military and civil targets, such as pubs and discos, Monika Harms, federal chief prosecutor, said at a press conference in Karlsruhe.

The men – two Germans who had converted to Islam and a Turkish national – are alleged members of ‘Islamic Jihad Union’, a little known terror group linked to Al Qaeda that has its roots in Uzbekistan, Ms Harms said.

The group had obtained 12 barrels of liquid weighing 730kg to be used in preparing explosives. This could have resulted in the equivalent of 550kg of the TNT explosive, Ms Harms added. “This was one of the most serious terror attacks ever planned in Germany” she said.

“There could have been a very big death toll” as the amount of explosives exceeded those used in the Madrid subway bombing and the London transport bombing in 2005, she said.

The men – who in 2006 had trained in terror camps in north Pakistan – were driven by “a hatred of US citizens”, according to Jörg Ziercke, president of the BKA federal crime agency. US authorities were involved in investigations that led to the arrests, he said.

The alleged terror cell had been under surveillance since December 2006, when one member was seen spying on a US military base in Hanau near Frankfurt.

The group started gathering the explosive liquid in February and in August rented a holiday apartment – reportedly in Oberschledorn, western Germany – to build the explosives. The group had gathered incendiary devices, cables and other equipment, Ms Harms said.

In July security officials managed to swap the content of the barrels with less explosive liquids, apparently without the group knowing. 30 premises across Germany were also raided by police, with terror and bomb-related information found.

Earlier, Franz Josef Jung, German defence minister, told German television the arrests occurred because "there was an imminent security threat".

Security officials in Berlin said the arrests may be linked to raids and arrests in Denmark on Tuesday, when, according to Danish police, eight people with alleged links to Al Qaeda were detained in order to prevent an attack.

Germany's interior ministry and BND foreign intelligence agency have been warning for several months of an increased danger of Islamic terror attacks in Germany, possibly linked to Berlin's military involvement in Afghanistan.

Germany has not been the target of a major Islamic terror attack in recent years, but several alleged terror cells have been broken up and suspects arrested, for instance a Lebanese man charged earlier this year with planning a series of train bombs in 2006. Three of the pilots involved in the September 11 2001 terror attacks had been living in Hamburg.
