Scott Brown becomes first Republican to back federal assault weapons ban

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown on Wednesday became the first sitting Republican senator to voice support for a federal assault weapons ban following the Newtown, Conn. shooting.

“As a state legislator in Massachusetts I supported an assault weapons ban thinking other states would follow suit. But unfortunately, they have not and innocent people are being killed,” Brown told The Republican/Mass Live Wednesday. “As a result, I support a federal assault weapons ban, perhaps like the legislation we have in Massachusetts.

Brown is the first sitting Republican senator to offer support for a new federal ban—something California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has pledged to introduce in January and something the White House has indicated will have the president’s support.

Unfortunately for assault ban backers, Brown failed to win re-election in November and won’t be in Congress to vote on gun legislation.

Several pro-gun Democratic lawmakers including West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin—who spoke with President Barack Obama to discuss the issue Tuesday—Virginia Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Joe Donnelly of Indiana have either expressed concern over the availability of assault weapons or have left the door open to a discussion.

  2. With Kerrys seat possibly being vacant soon this snake is trying to slither his way back into the Senate

  3. To be fair to Brown he isn't the only Mass Republican to support assault weapons bans

  4. Nah, it won't help him. Scott Brown trying to slip back into the senate is a known variable, and Kerry would not be up for consideration if there would be a question of that seat flipping.

Brown is now officially a RINO, now.:D

  5. Brown is pretty popular in Mass,we are going to need a strong candidate to beat him imo

BARNEY FRANK WE NEED YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BSAM

Maybe he's just not an AOWM.

  8. Of course, democrats are overjoyed with Warrens victory over him

  9. He could get back to congress if Kerry vacates his seat and Frank doesn't run against imo

  10. He is not old enuf for that. That condition seems to come on at about age 50 or so, unless the AWM feels particularly disenfranchised, then it can come on in the late 30's.
