Scientists depressing new discovery about the brain

  1. Mostly because people who don't want to change because they have a vested interest in maintaining their current opinion. The reasons are sometimes political, religious, financial, etc. But mostly, it's ego.

Changing their views means they might appear weak, indecisive, wishy-washy, or just plain different from their peer group. They run the risk of being ostracized from the group. And being ostracized is worse than standing up for their beliefs, for what's right, especially for women. There's comfort of being in a group.

Then you get to the politicians. The alleged decision makers. Any politician knows, either from experience or wisdom passed on by mentors/advisors, that stating an raw, unsanitized opinion is political suicide. Politicians are in it for their egos. They have no overriding need/desire/motivation to do the right thing. They're seduced by the power, the prestige, the money. Their sole interest is getting elected, and staying elected.

In the hands of a skilled interrogator, a politician's position on any major issue, be it immigration, labor, health care, abortion, etc., can be skillfully led down a path where, by choosing simple A or B answers, they eventually will reach a point where their position is flipped 180 degrees, in direct violation of their beliefs, values, and political platform.

Staying elected means being non-committal and not saying the wrong thing to any one at any time. Especially reporters...

Do you think that we will see within a few years an indirect effort by the government to control internet content via the major corporate internet providers? I personally am concerned about this possibility, and it seems we have already had an attempt by some corporations to "filter" content or use other means to "adjust" the ease with which it can be accessed, such as allowing different download speeds depending on what is being downloaded. If this de facto censoring does occur, then I would guess it will be in baby steps so that we are hardly aware that it is happening.

Yes, as you point out, politicians strive to remain "firmly non-committed" to avoid any possibility of having to admit to changing one's mind and thereby receiving the kiss of death, i.e., being labeled a "flip flopper." We've been led to believe "flip-flopping," when it occurs in a politician, is a very bad thing. So it seems to be the rare politician that will admit he/she has changed their opinion. A single change can be labeled a "flip flop" by your opposition! How well we have succeeded in cutting off that path to enlightenment! What fools we are! What a Country!

I am not sure I understand your question. Do you ask will the the USA government control the internet information? I think no. I think the internet for the USA will have all the information but maybe people will only go to the websites advertise so much. Is like the brand names have loyals people. So I think the information is open always on the interent in the USA, and so your bias to loyalty will take you where you want to go. When you are curious, you will leave your bias and look for more information.

Yall quit busting on the roofer...you live in clay shingle pueblos? I thought not.

To the OP: people in this country (and every other country where the productive are marginalized to the benefit of the lazy that no longer have to use their mental faculties of survival instinct & critical thinking) usually think with their heart, and live through their stomach (or groin).

In short, they make decisions based on emotion.
