Same day margin requirements for Interactive Brokers?

Discussion in 'Retail Brokers' started by scorcher8196, Jan 14, 2018.

  1. Hi,

What's Interactive Brokers' intraday, aka same day margin requirement? I know it's 50% overnight, however their website doesn't indicate margin requirements for day trades.

I'm interested in rules for Canadian accounts, however would be nice to know what their rules are elsewhere.

    Thanks!!

  3. 1. IB sets its margin requirements higher than exchange minimums for stock indices.

    2. Intraday margin is 50% of IB's "higher than exchange minimum margins".

    "GLOBEX ES E-mini S&P 500 ES 4039.125 3231.30 8078.25 6462.60..."

"$8078 is initial margin", "$6462" is maintenance.... $4039/$3231 are initial/maintenance for intraday trades.

IB is not one of those brokers offering anything like "$500/contract" intraday.

  4. What kind of instruments are you interested in? Stocks, futures, ...?

Yep, and then they may add on a daily exposure fee too. It's calculated by a secret algo and seems to have increased along with the broader market (at least it did for me).

  6. Stocks, ETFs, Options.

However, based on my phone call, as a Canadian - they offer 50% on stocks and 75% margin on 3X leveraged ETFs. They said over night margin's the same as intraday, however I'm still not 100% on that - the guy didn't sound too sure, so I'll call them again this week.

In Canada, there aren't any special restrictions on margin requirements for 3x leveraged ETFs - as opposed to the US' FINRA regulations - and that's what I'm looking for: lowest margin requirements PLUS offering an automated trading platform such as MultiCharts, eSignal, MetaCharts. NinjaTrader's offered exclusively through Interactive Brokers in Canada. (And starting a holding company in the US isn't a feasible work-around as then I'd be subject to tough FINRA regulations when it comes to margin).
