  1. Can anyone tell me off the top of their head, in terms of open interest/dollar value, what is the most "popular" options for investing in the S&P 500 ?

Are they the CBOE options on the cash index ? Option on the ES/SP futures ?

Or is it not really clear cut ?

    Thanks,

  2. Open interest in the SPX 1400 (Apr) strike dwarfs any open interest in SP. 166K of open interest (call side only). Multiplier on SPX is only 100 , SP is 250, so if you want to compare apples to apples, SPX open interest would be 66K if the multiplier was 250 (166,000/250) . 66K vs less than 20 on a particular strike.

Paper uses SPX. I would venture to say SPY is used more by retail, but I don't have anything to support that theory.
