Russia & Ukraine

  1. Zelenski should announce that he will be visiting Sevastopol at the end of the month just to watch them go ballistic and nutso on Russian TV.

  3. Eventually, down the road, someone will cook up a deal whereby Nordstream:cool: 2 etc, are fired up and Ukraine gets a cut of the revenues to Russia as part of reparations. The Russians will be pissed but they need the revenue and the Europeans will hurry to sign up because they screwed themselves into a corner with their energy "plan."

Not saying that is all they get for reparations. The seized Russia are gone from Russia, but Ukraine needs that just to fight the war, not as reparations.

Might have to throw Crimea and St. Petersburg in with the deal.

Also, I am pretty sure the Ukrainians do not want to be paid in rubles, so if the usual suspects here would refrain from putting up charts showing the value of the ruble, that would be great.

    RUSSIA
Putin’s Draft Scares Away his Own Citizens, Hurts National Economy

Russia’s borders are looking looser than a runny borscht.

As Vladimir Putin continues his woebegone war in Ukraine, Russian civilians are leaving in droves, with many fleeing to nearby countries and wealthier citizens seeking the island life far from the front lines, Bloomberg reported. The exodus is taking a toll on the national economy.

    Techie Defectie

Putin’s invasion has been met with at best mixed support at home. Most didn’t expect Ukraine to fight hard, and when it did, the morale of Russian forces plunged. In September, Putin announced a mobilization of 300,000 reserves, and since then, more than 700,000 military-age men have allegedly fled the country, according to Forbes Russia. Border crossings are often jammed for miles, with many abandoning their cars and taking whatever they can carry.

Russia’s tech industry is seeing significant departures. A recent survey found that 25% of IT workers were considering leaving the country and 6% had already done so this year. In February, the California-based rideshare startup inDrive had 1,200 employees in Moscow and the Serbian city of Yakutsk. “We’ll have zero by the end of the year,” CEO Arsen Tomsky told the WSJ. Workers are leaving for neighboring nations like Turkey, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. The Russian border rush is hurting the economy as well as Putin’s war efforts:

    • Tech represented just under 6% of Russia’s GDP, but was one of the fastest-growing parts of the economy before the war, according to economists at Bryansk State Technical University. Tech offered fairly high-paying jobs and connected Russian employees with Western companies.

    • Because of all the departures, the tax burden is rising for those who remain. The Russian central bank said at the end of October that the economy would contract between 3% and 3.5% this year, which would be the deepest recession of any large economy in the world this year.

    Life’s a Beach:
More well-off citizens are looking to take indefinite leave in the Caribbean via investment initiatives – programs that grant citizenship in exchange for significant funding to the society, culture, or the economy. From there, people can move freely to other places like the US, China, and the UK. Fleeing Russians could make up the biggest chunk of applicants to the small island nation of Grenada, where the minimum investment is $150,000, Bloomberg reported. With its warm weather and beautiful beaches, Grenada isn’t such a bad place to ride out a war.

Seems to be a reasonable proposal. It does not include repatriations, formal Nuremberg-style war crime trials, and other items that have been floated previously. However I expect Putin will want no part of it -- since Putin does not really want peace he wants to push his vision of creating a new Soviet Union.

Zelenskyy lays out 10-point peace plan for Ukraine at G20, including withdrawal of Russian troops and 'all for all' prisoner swap

    • Zelenskyy virtually addressed world leaders at the G20 summit in Bali on Tuesday.
    • He told them that Russia's war must end, and proposed a 10-step peace plan.
    • The plan includes ensuring nuclear and food safety, and an "all for all" prisoner swap.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday laid out a 10-point peace plan for peace, which includes the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and an "all for all" prisoner swap.

Speaking in a virtual address at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Zelenskyy said the war should be ended "justly and on the basis of the UN Charter and international law," according to an official transcript of the speech.

"I am convinced now is the time when the Russian destructive war must and can be stopped," he said.

Zelenskyy also proposed a 10-step peace plan, which includes the following:
    1. Radiation and nuclear safety
    2. Food security
    3. Energy security
    4. Release of prisoners and deportees
    5. Implementation of the UN Charter
    6. Withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities
    7. Justice
    8. Ecocide and the protection of the environment
    9. Prevention of escalation
    10. Confirmation of the end of the war
Chief among Zelenskyy's requests was for G20 leaders to use their power to "make Russia abandon nuclear threats" and to implement a price cap on energy imported from Moscow.

He also called for an "all for all" prisoner swap with Russia, saying: "Thousands of our people — military and civilians — are in Russian captivity. We must release all these people … we must unite for the sake of the only realistic model of the release of prisoners — 'all for all.'"

Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the event, sending his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov instead.

Zelenskyy mocked Putin's absence in his speech, repeatedly addressing the leaders as the "G19."

His address comes after Moscow ordered a withdrawal of troops from Kherson — the largest city that was occupied by Russian forces since the start of the invasion in February.

It marked one of the most significant setbacks for Putin in the Ukraine war so far.

Zelenskyy visited the city on Monday, where he promised jubilant residents that Ukraine would reclaim control of all of its occupied territories.

In his speech to the G20, Zelenskyy accused Russia of turning the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant into a radioactive bomb that can explode at any moment.

He also said that Russia was trying to turn the cold into a weapon against millions of Ukrainians, having destroyed about 40% of the country's energy infrastructure through air strikes.

  9. The plan calls for withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine.

Sounds good but- as always- the $60,000 question is "How do you define "Ukraine?"

Zelensky is playing to the American audience a bit. He wants to be able to show that he is doing some peace efforts along with gimme, gimme, gimme for arms.

In unrelated news, Reuters reporting that some of the Russian troops are withdrawing from even the east side of the river. Not sure what that is all about. Maybe redeploying troops to some other area before winter limits their movement. Or repositioning differently to defend Crimea. Don't know. It's only some troops at this point. The conventional wisdom says they will stay across the river and just shell and harass Kherson. Don't know. Also possible they have intelligence that the Ukrainians are coming over to get them. Don't know.
