Hertling is good at this stuff. Really informative stuff about black swans, fatigue and moving too fast…
If Russia would do that, NATO and the entire Western world has no other option than to retaliate and use nuclear too. If not, Russia will take Ukraine with nuclear threats, then it will take the Baltic States with nuclear threats, then it will take Poland with nuclear threats, then it will take Moldova with nuclear threats...etc And the West will just watch while this is going on, till it is their turn to be invaded? If someone wants to fight you, your best chances are to fight too. If you don't you will be beaten up and with 100% certainty lose the fight. So not react nuclear is the worst solution. Worse than the damage of a nuclear war. It is important that NATO would communicate this clearly to Putin, if not he will think it will be as easy as taking Crimea in 2014. Only the fear of retaliation can stop Putin from using nuclear. I wonder if the Russians would still want to fight if Moscow and St Petersburg are hit nuclear. I also wonder how many Russians will go to war if there would be a total mobilization. My guess is every Russian who can will try to escape. How many of these Russian politicians will go to war themselves? Or send their children? ZERO.
I do think NATO should draw "a line in the sand" via statement. It does concern me Pooty poots may attempt WMD's to save face if the territorial gains continue.
The Russians dropping a nuclear bomb on their neighbors is probably the worst thing they can do long term. Even China would be forced to isolate them. People don’t want nukes because they spoil the land, are just dangerous to use and are overly destructive. It doesn’t take much to figure out using nuclear weapons is a dead end.
I agree, but this is how 99% of the world is thinking. Unfortunatelly Putin is not in these 99%, that's the problem. He is in the remaining 1%. And on top of that he is the man who will make the decision. To me it is important to know NOW what we will do if ever nuclear is used. Because at that moment we have no time to meet with all partners and discuss a few days what to do. Millions of Ukrainians can already be dead before we take a decision. Remember how much time was lost just after the invation? And what the dramatic result was of that delay? If NATO would have been prepared, thousands of people would not have been killed, and billions of damage might have been avoided. The best defense is a good offense.
well, Mariupol looking like Aleppo after carpet bombing isn't all that much different than having nuked the place (destruction wise).
