Proof that Russians are rude, nasty, ignorant assholes and their restaurant food isn't any different is losing McDonalds and Starbucks is not cause for national celebration?

Russian food cooked at home is OK but just alright. Most Eastern European food is bla.

Borsch, done correctly, is heaven (though Ukrainians say it's theirs, not Russian). The "Olivie" salad, prepared well, is a delight for the senses and addictive. Russian-style sauerkraut is to Western stuff like ice cream is to milk (and is very easy to prepare - I have a batch fermenting right now).

The other stuff, like "studen'" and "seledka pod shuboi" is very specifically Russian and Westerners are kinda scared off.

Oh and Kvas - again, well made Kvas - is the best thing on Earth.

  4. Definitely. I make my own kraut as well.

Gotta keep that gut bacteria perky.

I alternate it with some kimchi.

For spicy stuff I have my own "matbucha" recipe. It's heavenly. I gotta start selling it :)

I see similarities between Putin and Trump:
    • They both used patriotism to manipulate people.
    • Trump used MAGA, make America great again. Putin uses make Russia great again.
    • Putin is only interested in himself and his personal financial and political interests. He doesn't care about any Russian.
    • Trump also is only interested in himself and his personal financial and political interests. He doesn't care about any American.
    • Trump is not on the blacklist of Russia. Obvious as he is an ally of Putin. He tried to weaken the US by setting poeple up against each other. Remember the attack on Capitol Hill.
    • Putin always manipulated elections, Trump tried to do the same.

The issue is well made, which is why I made a difference between home and proletariat restaurants.

My experience of old Russia (late '80s) was a trip to Sakhalín island North of Japan (my dad was doing some project) where we were brought to a restaurant for 'real Russian food' not nice Asian food :) I did like Baikal softdrink though.

Every event I have been to with Russians at birthdays and whatever it seems to involve a bland pea and pressed ham roll salad thing and Olivier salad which seems too like the first to bother having two dishes.

Also a fish mousse with horseradish decorative scales which only kind of worked. I think being drunk before eating probably helps?

Mind you, when is comes to bland, Colombians where I live now have everyone beat. They have two traditional seasonings, sugar and salt.

  10. Russian rocker Yuri Shevchuk charged after blasting Putin during concert

The outspoken 65-year-old musician was performing in Ufa, Russia, on May 18 when he paused the show at the “Ufa-Arena” venue and addressed the audience.

Shevchuk questioned the aims of the war, soon entering its fourth month, and why “Russian and Ukrainian youths are dying,” as seen in cellphone footage that has been making the rounds on social media.

“Elderly people, women and children are dying for some kind of Napoleonic plans of our next Caesar, yes?” he said from the stage, drawing raucous cheers and applause from his fans.

“The motherland, my friends, is not the ass of a president that you have to constantly lick and kiss,” he continued. “The motherland is a poor grandmother selling potatoes at the train station. That is the motherland.”

At the conclusion of the concert, local cops arrived at Shevchuk’s dressing room, barricaded the door and spent an hour grilling the beloved singer about “his remarks concerning the war and motherland,” according to producer Radmir Usayev.
