You are somewhat correct. We never came close to bringing our full military might in Vietnam, but we did devastate the countryside and cities. I don't agree with this statement either. It is unclear to me what the real reason for Americans being in Vietnam was, though the official reason is well known. Most Americans don't know that the U.S. paid for nearly all of the French war in Vietnam following WWII . It is a fact that Indochina was an important source of natural rubber, tin and agricultural products. We know that today Vietnam has the third largest proven oil reserves in Asia. Off shore oil was known there by at least 1975 but my suspicion is that the Americans knew about oil reserves there prior to 1975.
