Thats not it, IMO. From Putin’s side it can give an out for a purging of opponents, ie “the Americans are attempting to remove me and this oligarch or military person is in cahoots…” But from our side we have a whole sanctions package that is globally interconnected with a lot of countries that is supposed to be connected to the Ukrainian war. We don’t really want those conversations to morph into a narrative of regime change. It can divide us if start to unilaterally move goal posts without consultation. Now I am seeing some talking heads saying it’s like in 1980s when Reagan labeled Russia the Evil Empire because it was off of the cuff and threw things out of order. I don’t see it that way because as I said above, we are interconnected with a lot of countries on this issue. We really should move forward united.
